Rather than going out and obtaining medications to help eliminate your acne problem, you may opt for a more natural approach instead of relying on chemicals. Treating acne without the assistance of medications is both safer and healthier and oftentimes cheaper. There are more than a few things you can do at home with ingredients you may already have in your kitchen. With a little time invested and a few natural ingredients, you can improve your complexion the natural way.

Step 1

Stand in a hot shower for a few minutes or lay a hot washcloth over your face to allow the steam to open up your pores. With the pores open, it makes it easier to reach the bacteria hidden inside, making the next time you wash your face more effective.

Step 2

Mix uncooked oatmeal with water into a thick paste and apply it to your skin. Leave the paste on your skin for 15 to 20 minutes before washing it away with warm water. Use this method twice a week to help eliminate acne.

Step 3

Wash with an antibacterial soap or an acne-specific soap. If you would rather take a more natural approach, add a tablespoon of table salt to a pint of warm water and use the saltwater to wash your face. The salt will help to dry up the oils that cause acne. Rinse your face well with warm water and pat dry with a soft clean dry towel. Wash twice daily.

Step 4

Apply fresh lemon juice to your face with a clean cloth or cotton balls. Allow the lemon juice to sit on your face for half an hour, reapplying more of the solution as it dries up. Rinse your face with clean warm water and pat your skin dry with a clean, dry towel. Do this is often as you like.

Step 5

Use water-based sunscreen. If you plan on being outside in sunny weather, apply a water-based sunscreen, as oil-based sunscreens will only block your pores, making acne worse. However, limit your time in the sunshine, as too much sun can irritate your skin.

Tips and Warnings

  • Changes to your diet can also help to dramatically reduce acne. Greasy and sugary foods with no nutritional value should be eliminated. Consume more fruits and vegetables, as the vitamins found in them are good for your skin. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help flush out toxins and impurities that may be contributing to acne.
  • Do not pop or pick at pimples, as this can lead to scars. Avoid handling your face with your fingertips and keep your hair pulled back, as the oils in our fingertips and hair can contribute to making acne worse.
