Skin is the human body's largest organ, and it has an important job. Skin keeps infections away from the body and provides several layers of protection from the elements. Since it covers our bodies, it is also the first thing people see. In order to keep skin healthy enough to protect the body and smooth enough to feel comfortable in, it is important to take daily steps for skin maintenance and protection.

Step 1

Wash your skin. Every day, wash yourself with a gentle cleanser, and wash away any makeup on your face before going to bed. You may want to choose a special cleanser just for your face if you have skin problems, such as acne or eczema.

Step 2

Keep your skin moist. Avoid hot and long showers and baths, which can dry out your skin, and dry off by gently patting your skin with a towel instead of rubbing. Use a moisturizer in the morning and in the evening, or whenever your skin feels dry.

Step 3

Put on sunscreen. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can damage your skin, causing dark spots and wrinkles. Skin cancer can also develop if your skin is unprotected. Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher if you plan on spending time outdoors, and apply it about 30 minutes before going outside. If you are not going to be spending time outside, wear sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher to protect yourself from rays while you are in your car or outdoors for brief periods of time. Some skin products contain sunscreen with an SPF of 15. Use sunscreen daily.

Step 4

Make healthy lifestyle choices. Smoking narrows your blood vessels and decreases your blood flow, robbing your skin of important nutrients, such as collagen and vitamin A. This can make your skin less elastic and prone to wrinkles. Alcohol can dry the skin out as well.

Step 5

Eat a healthy and balanced diet. According to Science Daily, this will provide the skin nutrients necessary for health and appearance. Biotin and vitamins C and E can protect the skin from sun damage and repair skin tissue. Eat whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low-fat dairy products and lean meats. Silica, which is found in leeks, strawberries and asparagus, can increase skin elasticity. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in salmon and flaxseed, can moisten skin and reduce blackheads.

Step 6

Check your skin. Look regularly for damage and irregularities. Moles that are raised, changing color or have an irregular shape can be a sign of a problem such as melanoma. Talk to a dermatologist about any spots or areas that concern you.
