The Nuva Ring contraceptive is a small, flexible ring that you put inside your vagina once every month for three weeks. The ring contains the hormones estrogen and progestin. These hormones work by preventing ovulation while altering cervical mucous and the uterine lining. Less than one out of 100 women will get pregnant each year if they always use Nuva Ring as directed, reports Planned Parenthood. However, there are some side effects and risks associated with Nuva Ring.

Vaginal Infections, Irritation and Discharge

A risk of Nuva Ring is an increase in vaginal infection, irritation and discharge. If you develop a vaginal infection, you may need to be treated with an antibiotic. Report any symptoms of vaginal irritation and increased discharge to your gynecologist, who may do an internal exam and analyze a sample of cells from your vagina. If you are diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis, you will be treated with an oral medication.

Sexual Effects

The hormones in Nuva Ring may change a woman's sexual desire, states Planned Parenthood, decreasing her libido, or sex drive. If this side effect becomes troublesome, contact your physician.

Irregular Bleeding

You may experience irregular menstruation while using Nuva Ring. Spotting or bleeding between menstrual periods can occur. This side effect may diminish after a few months as your body adjusts to Nuva Ring.

Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is a common hormonal effect of Nuva Ring. It may be similar to the breast tenderness that you experience prior to your menstrual period. Breast tenderness may subside after your body adjusts to Nuva Ring. Wearing a supportive bra and using a warm compress may help alleviate breast discomfort. If you notice any changes in breast tissue, nipple discharge or the presence of a lump in your breast, seek immediate medical attention.

Nausea and Vomiting

A possible risk of Nuva Ring is nausea and vomiting. If vomiting becomes severe, you may be at risk for dehydration. Contact your physician if you experience severe vomiting while using Nuva Ring.

Severe Risks

Nuva Ring may cause serious side effects that can be fatal. These include heart attack, stroke, or having a blood clot in the legs, lungs, heart or brain, states Planned Parenthood. Additional risks include hypertension, heart disease, breast cancer, gallstones, liver tumors and pancreatitis. According to the manufacturer, cigarette smoking increases the risk of serious cardiovascular side effects, especially in women over 35; women who use combination hormonal contraceptives, including Nuva Ring, are strongly advised not to smoke.
