At-home hair removal methods give only temporary results. This doesn't necessarily mean at-home hair removal is any better or worse than professional treatments. It's just that these methods work by removing either a portion of the hair or the entire hair itself. They do nothing to affect hair growth originating from the follicle.
Shaving
Even women suffering from unwanted hair growth along the upper lip can achieve positive results with shaving. A razor and little shaving cream or gel is all you need to shave at home. But shaving can result in razor bumps and ingrown hairs, according to TeensHealth, a service of the Nemours Foundation. You can prevent ingrown hairs by shaving in the direction of your hair growth.
Depilatories
Another home remedy for hair removal along the upper lip is a depilatory. This type of product uses a chemical agent that disintegrates the hair, according to Hairfacts.com. While it's best to use depilatories formulated for the sensitive skin of the face, these products may still cause redness or chemical burns to the skin after use.
Waxing
You can also use at-home waxing kits to remove hair from your upper lip. The method of hair removal varies from product to product. Some kits use pre-coated strips that you apply directly to the upper lip and then remove to eliminate the hair. Others use a heated wax that's first applied to the upper lip and then the strips are laid over this wax, before they're removed, to eliminate the hair.
Sugaring
While this isn't as popular as other methods of hair removal, you can also remove hair from the upper lip through the process of sugaring. This method of hair removal uses a sugary substance that's you apply to the upper lip and then strips similar to those used in waxing are gently pressed into the solution. Once the area has set, you pull the strips away from the skin, resulting in hair removal.
Tweezing
You can also tweeze individual hairs from your upper lip with a pair of tweezers. This tends to work best if there are only a few hairs, as you need to tweeze hairs individually.
Epilators
Similar to electric razors, epilators are hand-held devices that remove hair. But instead of shearing the hairs, the device pulls them out at the root, which can be quite painful. Epilators are more commonly used to remove unwanted hair from the legs, but you can use some of them on your face.
Laser Hair Removal
At-home laser hair removal kits can also help remove hair along the upper lip. These devices emit low-level laser light energy that vaporizes the shaft of the hair, and thereby removes it from the skin. The American Academy of Dermatology claims that at-home laser hair removal can effectively remove hair, but may cause hyperpigmentation or scarring. It's best to use professional laser hair removal if this is the method you prefer to use to remove hair.
