Smart Shopping for Body Gels

When we think of our body's organs we think of things like the heart, liver, kidneys and lungs. But, our skin is the body's largest organ--and in many ways the most important. Our skin is part of what's known as the integumentary system, which also includes our hair and nails. It serves as our contact with the outside world, draws energy from the sun and protects us from harmful bacteria. So, it only makes sense to take great care of this vital organ.

Most skin damage is self-inflicted. Too much sun exposure dries the skin and increases the risk of cancer. Using harsh cleansers, including many soaps, washes away the skins protective oils and leaves behind dry, damaged skin. Alcohol based cleansers, and even using too much hot water, have the same damaging effects.

Body gels are formulated to gently cleanse the skin without damage. Many gels use natural oils and other ingredients to help soothe dry skin--or, if you have oily skin, there are gels designed to clean away the oil without overdrying the skin.

What to Look for

Look for anything and everything. If you like to shop you're in for a real treat. There are thousands of body gels on the market and there is bound to be one that's perfect for you.

Your first consideration should be your skin type. If you have problems with dry skin, you'll want to choose a body gel with natural oils to help restore your skin's moisture. You'll find many types of oils, including almond, avocado, apricot, Brazilian nut, palm and coconut. You may have to experiment with these oils to see which works best for you. Another factor to consider is fragrance. Smell the body gel, before you plunk your your cash, to see if the aroma is pleasant. Many gels are also available in an unscented version.

If oily skin is your issue you're also in luck. Many gels work by washing away the excess oil and cleaning the skin's pores. It's a bit of a delicate balance. The gel must do a good job of cleaning away the oils, but not dry out the skin. Again, you might have to try a couple different products before you find the one that's right for you.

Common Pitfalls

If you just want a good, simple body gel you can buy one at the grocery store. There are many basic gels available, at very reasonable prices, that work quite well. But if you feel like splurging, you can find many gels with organic ingredients, special additives like crushed Hawaiian flowers and a variety of natural herbs.

One final word of caution--don't overdo. Remember that most skin damage is self-inflicted and, like your favorite sweater, you should "wash with care."
