Cold sores appear as blisters that are on or near the lips. They are also known as fever blisters. Cold sores are outbreaks that are caused by the herpes simplex virus type 1. The virus may lay dormant for periods of time and then have outbreaks that appear as blisters, or cold sores. Although there is no cure for the virus, there are things that can be done to reduce the recurrence of outbreaks and to lower the chances of contracting the virus.

Prevention

There are some things that you can do to help prevent acquiring the Herpes simplex virus type 1. Wash your hands often, especially if you are in high traffic areas where there are many people such as airports or hotels. Lip contact, such as kissing, should be avoided with anyone who has blisters on or near the lips. Avoid using items that may touch the lips and are shared with someone who may have the herpes simplex virus type 1. These items include lip balm, towels and eating utensils. Other items to avoid sharing include razors and toothbrushes.

Outbreak Tips

Once the jerpes simples virus type 1 has been acquired, some actions may help to prevent further outbreaks. According to the Patient Education Institute, living a healthy lifestyle will help prevent outbreaks by maintaining a healthy immune system. Exercising and eating right are two elements that should be adhered to when leading a healthy lifestyle. Avoid sicknesses that weaken the immune system such as the cold and flu. These avoidance mechanisms include frequent hand washing, avoiding touching the mouth, nose and eyes, staying away from situations in which people with colds or flu are present and maintaining a healthy diet.

Other Factors

Exposure to the sun has been associated with outbreaks of cold sores. To minimize this risk, lip balm can be worn when prolonged outdoor activities are planned. Sunscreen on the face can also reduce the sun's effects on facial skin, and according to The Mayo Clinic, sunscreen helps prevent cold sores. Lip balm should be considered in both summer and winter seasons. Winter can create dry conditions, which can tend to cause cracked lips, which have also been associated with cold sore outbreaks. Lysine is an amino acid supplement that can help to prevent cold sore outbreaks.
