Olmesartan Medoxomil Side Effects

Olmesartan medoximil is the generic name for Benicar, an angiotensin II receptor blocker. Angiotensin II receptor blockers are antihypertensives treat high blood pressure either alone or in combination with other medications. Olmesartan blocks the activity of angiotensin II in the body. Angiotensin II causes narrowing of the blood arteries, which can increase the blood pressure. It also stimulates the release of aldosterone, a chemical that causes water and sodium retention in the body. This can further increase the blood pressure. Olmesartan prevents these actions and lower blood pressure. Using olmesartan may produce several side effects. Discuss any concerns with your physician before starting the medication.

Dizziness

Dizziness proves a common side effect seen with olmesartan. According to the "Drug Information Handbook," about 3 percent of individuals experience dizziness. Don't drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how the drug will affect you. Also, don't take part in any activity that requires alertness or concentration. This side effect should start to decrease as the body adjusts to the medication. If the dizziness worsens, inform your health care provider right away. Orthostatic hypotension may cause dizziness, as well. Orthostatic hypotension is a sudden drop in blood pressure that occurs upon rising too quickly. The elderly prove most at risk for experiencing orthostatic hypotension. Be careful when rising from a sitting or lying position to a standing position to avoid injury from a fall.

Diarrhea

Olmesartan may cause diarrhea in about 5 percent of users. This may also lead to bloating and abdominal pain, which can become uncomfortable and affect normal daily function. Drink plenty of fluids and avoid big, fatty meals. Discuss other options such as use of anti-diarrheal agents with your physician. If diarrhea persists for more than 3 days or if you have bloody stools, seek medical help right away.

Hyperglycemia

Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar levels, may occurs in up to 10 percent of people taking olmesartan, and is a primary concern in diabetics. You should inform your physician of your complete medical history including diseases, medications and dietary supplements to ensure you are getting the proper care and avoid any complications.

Respiratory Effects

Many respiratory effects are more common during the administration of olmesartan. Bronchitis or the inflammation of the airways of the lungs, and pharyngitis, an inflammation of the throat, occur in up to 10 percent of individuals. Rhinitis is an inflammation of the nose, which leads to a runny nose. It occurs in about 5 percent of individuals on the drug. Sinusitis is an inflammation on the sinuses located on the cheeks; this may also occur in about 5 percent of individuals repots the "Drug Information Handbook."
