Digestive disorders affect approximately 70 million Americans, resulting in 60 million doctor visits, according to John Hopkins Medicine. Frequently, older adults experience these difficulties, due to the age-related changes that occur in the digestive tract. Gastritis, heartburn, Crohn's disease and irritable bowel syndrome are among the many digestive disorders that affect the stomach.

Gastritis/Stomach Ulcers

Gastritis is a general term that encompasses a number of conditions affecting the stomach. Gastritis is described as the inflammation of the lining of the stomach, which results from infection, injury or chronic use of medications (such as NSAIDs) or alcohol, according to the Mayo Clinic. Acute gastritis occurs suddenly while chronic gastritis appears over time. In most cases, the condition is easily treated and improves quickly. For some individuals, however, gastritis increases risks of stomach cancer and can lead to ulcers.

Heartburn/GERD

Heartburn is a common condition, affecting nearly everyone at some time, according to Medline Plus. The name "heartburn" describes the sensations experienced in the chest or throat. Chronic heartburn may be a result of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) while occasional heartburn is often diet related or a side effect of pregnancy. The stomach acid that backs up into your esophagus causes the pain, which may also damage the esophagus over time. Talk to your doctor if you suffer with heartburn more than twice a week. If additional symptoms occur, such as chest pain, contact your doctor immediately, as you may be experiencing a heat attack.

IBS

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common disorder that occurs in the colon. While no permanent damage results, painful symptoms such as cramping and bloating in the abdomen occur. In addition, embarrassing and uncomfortable gas as well as constipation or diarrhea may result. The Mayo Clinic reports many individuals with IBS are able to control their symptoms with diet modifications and stress management.

Crohn's Disease

Crohn's disease is an inflammatory bowel disease that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, which can lead to damage in the small or large intestine. The symptoms of Crohn's disease may be mild or severe, causing diarrhea, bloody stools, ulcers and abdominal pain. No cure for the disease exists, however, the Mayo Clinic reports long-term remission or reduced symptoms are possible with treatment.
