Propecia is the only pill approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating hair loss. The American Hair Loss Association notes that it is more effective than minoxidil when it comes to treating male pattern baldness and is easy to take. Propecia works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT binds itself to the hair follicle and causes it to shrink to the point where it is no longer able to produce new hair.

Step 1

See your doctor. Propecia is available by prescription only, and your doctor will want to know if you have had any past health issues that can make Propecia a risk. Previous health issues that your doctor will consider are urinary problems, liver problems and known allergies to similar drugs.

Step 2

Take one Propecia tablet in the morning with a glass of water. Propecia prescriptions do not come with a suggested time to take tablets, but mornings are thought to be best, as that is when testosterone levels are the highest, states Dr. William Rassman, medical director and founder of the New Hair Institute. You can take Propecia with or without food. Do not exceed the prescribed amount of Propecia.

Step 3

Watch for any side effects that occur after starting your Propecia use. The most serious side effect is an allergic reaction, which warrants immediate medical treatment. Drugs.com also warns that you should immediately report any changes within the breast area to your doctor.

Other reported side effects include ejaculation problems; swelling of the hands, feet or breasts; dizziness or headaches; and feeling as though you are about to faint. Bring any noticeable changes in your health to your doctor's attention.
