Acne can cause sufferers both emotional stress and scars, advises the Mayo Clinic. It may be caused by the overproduction of oil from sebaceous glands, irregular shedding of dead skin cells causing irritation of hair follicles or excessive bacteria (P. acnes) on the skin. Acne can affect people of any age. Using the "best" acne prevention methods will help you worry less about your appearance and spend less time being self-conscious.

Cosmetics

Only use oil free or non-comedogenic (non-acne causing, will not clog pores) cosmetics, advises the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. The labels of products that meet these standards should include the words "oil-free" or "non-comedogenic." Cosmetics include foundations, blush, moisturizers, eye shadow, concealers, and hair-care products. If you wear make-up, be sure to remove it prior to going to bed at night, advises the Mayo Clinic. Not doing so may clog your pores and lead to acne. A lighter and less irritating powder-based foundation may not cause as much acne as liquid foundation. Be sure to throw away old make-up and clean any cosmetic applicators once a month with soapy water. If you use acne medication, you should apply it prior to putting your make-up on, advises AcneNet.org, from the American Academy of Dermatology.

Skin Care

Prevention of acne requires proper skin care. Never squeeze, pop or pick your acne. This can make your acne worse, lead to scarring, and delay the healing process. Wash your face twice a day and after sweating. AcneNet.org advises that you use a gentle cleanser and lukewarm water when washing your face. Abrasive soaps, toners, astringents and facial scrubs may irritate the skin and increase your risk of having a breakout. Washcloths and puffs may have the same effect, so apply the mild cleanser with your fingertips. While washing your skin is essential to the prevention of acne, KidsHealth.org advises that washing too much may dry your skin out or irritate existing acne.

Clothing

People who develop acne on their body need to be careful about the clothing they choose and wear. The Mayo Clinic advises that you wear loose fitting clothing. Things that trap heat or moisture can irritate your delicate skin. You also want to be careful of tight straps, backpacks, bike helmets or any sports equipment that may be tight or cause friction on your skin.

Diet

A true connection between diet and acne has yet to be established. Acne.org states that diet has a direct effect on the insulin levels in our body. Insulin affects the hormones that may play a role in the formation of acne. The hypothesis about this possible connection is that a diet that causes insulin spikes may affect the development of acne. A low glycemic diet, consisting of vegetables, fruits, seafood and grass-fed meat, may help stabilize insulin levels and decrease the development of acne.
