Some creams are important anti-aging products because they prevent skin damage from occurring while others provide skin repair and firming results. The best anti-aging creams contain proven anti-aging ingredients. A good start on preventing skin aging is maintaining a good skin regimen and using moisturizers that nourish the skin, keeping the drying effects of weather from aging the skin.

Sunblock

Wrinkles are the first sign of aging and can be prevented by using sunscreen. Exposure to the sun causes skin damage, skin spots, wrinkling and skin cancer, according to the National institutes of Health. Using a waterproof sunblock with a SPF of 30 or higher (one that offers UVA and UVB protection) is one of the best anti-aging creams for preventing skin damage and will help keep wrinkles at bay. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, "sunscreen is by far the most beneficial age-fighting product on the market."

Moisturizers

Moisturizers plump fine lines and make the "complexion look brighter and younger," according to the American Academy of Dermatology. A good moisturizer does not have to be expensive. Look for simple ingredients that soothe and moisturize. Fragrances do not make the moisturizer more effective. Some active ingredients in moisturizers that are proven to treat signs of aging are retinoids, alpha hydroxy acids, hydroquinone, peptides, kojic acid, salicylic acid and growth factors.
Retinols and hydroxy acids will increase sun sensitivity and susceptibility to sun damage. Always wear sunscreen when while using these products and for at least a week after.

Vitamin C Creams

Vitamin C applied topically stimulates collagen biosynthesis. Vitamin C skin creams are another anti-aging product that protects as well as prevents damage to the skin. Vitamin C has been shown to neutralize free radicals and boost collagen production, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. Vitamin C anti-aging creams should have ascorbic acid listed as one of the first ingredients. The most effective Vitamin C creams have 10 percent or more ascorbic acid.

Coenzyme Q10 Creams

There is some evidence that Coenzyme Q10 may prevent some signs of aging of the skin. It also softens and firms the skin, but the clinical data is limited and more studies need to be conducted on Coenzyme Q10 for more definitive answers. The Mayo Clinic's studies show that Coenzyme Q10 helps reduce fine lines around the eyes without side effects. Another benefit of Coenzyme Q10 is that it has been shown to protect against sun damage.
