Cocoa butter is derived from the fat of the cocoa bean and is used in chocolates, lotions, soaps and cosmetics. Due to its pleasant scent and moisturizing properties, it is found in many beauty products. It can be the primary ingredient, or simply added to a product, to provide a favorable scent. The antioxidants found in the fat of the cocoa bean contribute to the benefits of cocoa butter lotion, making it a popular choice for improving the health and appearance of skin.

Stretch Marks

Lotions containing cocoa butter claim to help reduce the appearance of stretch marks and prevent them from developing. This is because the moisture and nourishing properties of cocoa butter are thought to stimulate the production of collagen, which gives skin its elasticity and helps it to stretch during periods of weight loss or weight gain when stretch marks develop. In a 2010 study by the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University Hospital in Jamaica, patients who applied a cocoa butter lotion to stretch marks noticed a minor difference in the appearance of the marks compared to patients who applied a placebo cream. Cocoa butter lotion may not work to reduce the appearance of stretch marks for everyone, but its nourishing properties can relieve irritation that is caused by stretching of the skin.

Moisturizing Benefits

The moisturizing benefits found in cocoa butter lotion can soothe irritations and relieve uncomfortable symptoms of eczema and psoriasis, both chronic skin conditions that can cause itchy and red rashes. Cocoa butter also contains cocoa mass polyphenol (CMP), which can prevent inflammation of the skin. The moisture in cocoa butter also helps to create a barrier between the skin and the environment for protection. According to the Mayo Clinic, cocoa butter lotion can be applied to the skin of those suffering from urine leakage. The lotion provides protection for the skin and prevents urine from irritating the skin or causing a rash.

Aromatherapy

Since cocoa butter is made from chocolate, cocoa butter lotions have a pleasant chocolate scent. Cocoa butter lotion is used for massages and aromatherapy treatments. Deeply inhaling the scent of cocoa butter lotion can provide relaxation and stress relief. When combined with other ingredients, such as mango or shea butter, the lotion can be energizing as well.
