Effective Stretch Mark Remedies

Stretch marks occur when the connective tissue in the skin breaks down in the dermis. At first, they look like a purplish riverbed, but over time, the color disappears and they then become silver lines that can grow wider and longer. Stretch marks are most common during pregnancy and after excess weight gain. They can be found almost anywhere, but mainly on the stomach, buttocks, breasts and legs. Although there is no known remedy, there are many products and treatments available that can help lighten stretch marks and improve the skin.

Exfoliation

Exfoliation may help in removing layers of dead skin to help minimize the appearance of stretch marks and reveal softer, fresher skin. Oatmeal or baking soda can be an effective exfoliant, but be sure to apply a good moisturizer afterward to keep the skin soft and properly hydrated.

Vitamin K

Vitamin K is another effective stretch mark remover. It can be purchased as a cream, or simply add foods that are rich in vitamin K, such as tomatoes, liver, leafy vegetables and dairy products, to your diet.

Lavender and Chamomile

Natural-HomeRemedies.com suggests making a solution of 1 oz. of either avocado, sweet almond or jojoba oil mixed with seven drops of lavender and 1/2 tsp. of chamomile. Apply the solution to the affected areas and leave it on.

Olive Oil

Olive oil can help minimize stretch marks. Either use it alone or mix one half cup of it with one quarter cup of aloe vera gel and the liquids from six capsules of vitamin E and four capsules of vitamin A. Mix in a blender and store the solution in the refrigerator. Apply the mixture to stretch marks and leave it on.

Diet and Exercise

To help reduce the appearance of stretch marks, you should maintain a healthy body weight. Eat a healthy and balanced diet consisting of green vegetables and fruits that are rich in antioxidants, like carrots, cabbage, apples, oranges and papaya. You should also eat foods that are rich in vitamins C and E, zinc and protein, such as flax seeds, eggs, fish and dairy products. Drink plenty of water because it helps hydrate the skin, which helps return it to its original shape. Exercise is also key to reducing stretch marks as it tones muscle.
