Just the sight of hair starting to morph into a wiry mess can quickly turn a wonderful day into a devastating one. It can happen when you least expect it, whether from the sun, humidity, wind or a combination of all three. Other frizz culprits include damage from coloring, styling and improper hair care. Hair type is also a factor, with curly hair winning the prize for most likely to frizz without warning.
Hydrating Shampoos and Conditioners
The first wave of defense against frizz is a hydrating shampoo and conditioner to infuse moisture into hair and help calm and soften tresses. Look for shampoos and conditioners that are designed specifically for dry or damaged hair and have "hydrating," "moisturizing" or "repairs damage" on their labels. They contain special conditioners that will calm frizz and help hair become more manageable. Stylist.com reports that John Frieda, the original fighter of frizzy hair, launched a new line of products in 2010 called Frizz-Ease Smooth Start shampoos and conditioners. Products to avoid include any shampoos or conditioners that add volume or are designed for oily hair.
Deep Conditioners
Apply a deep conditioner once a week to repair damaged hair, soften dry hair and help it become more manageable. The top five deep conditioning products voted by Elle magazine readers are Biolage Fortethérapie Intensive Strengthening Masque, Garnier Fructis Haircare Instant Melting Conditioner, John Frieda Crème Serum Overnight Repair, Kérastase Nutridéfense and Paul Mitchell's The Masque.
Styling Products
A frizz-fighting styling product can be beneficial to keep the frizz gone all day. Apply it on wet hair before styling. Goodhousekeeping.com recommends Living Proof No Frizz by Sephora, which boasts the most advanced anti-frizz technology in over 30 years. The Good Housekeeping Research Institute tested the line against a leading frizz serum. They concluded that the Living Proof products "tamed frizz better than the control for half the testers, and at least as well for all but one of the rest. Over half the women also said Living Proof prevented frizz and improved the look and feel of their hair more than their current product."
Frizz Control Serums
A frizz control serum is one of the most effective ways to get your locks in line in an instant. Smooth a small amount onto your hair and the frizz instantly disappears. Most serums have the bonus of adding shine. BioSilk Silk Therapy and Got2b Glossy Anti-Frizz Shine Serum were chosen as top frizz serums in the Customers' Choice Best of Folica awards. Other popular products from Folica.com are Frizz-Ease Hair Serum and TiGi Bed Head Control Freak Serum.
Thermal Heat Sprays
Flat irons quickly transform frizzy, curly hair into stick-straight strands. Used repeatedly, hair can become brittle and damaged, contributing to future frizz. A thermal heat spray offers protection from the perils of frequent straightening. Choose Allure magazine's Best of Beauty Awards winner Tresemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray or CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray from the Best of Folica.
