Women golfers may not be able to hit the ball as far as their male counterparts, but there are no other limits to the game. Women golfers need to develop the aspects of a complete game a bit more thoroughly than male players by emphasizing accuracy, technique and preparation. Once you get the basics of the game down, you can try a few tricks of the trade to get extra distance.

On the Tee

Before you hit the ball off the tee, realize that you are not going to drive the ball 300 yards down the middle. The average female golfer hits the ball 150 to 170 yards off the tee. Stand behind the tee and pick out the spot that you want your drive to go given those parameters. Visualize your shot landing in the perfect spot for a second shot. Put your eyes back on that spot as you set up to hit. Concentrate on your technique and an accurate shot. Do not try to kill the ball.

Fairway Wood

This is one of the most dreaded clubs in the bag for any golfer to hit, and many women golfers fail to use it because they fear failure. But according to PGA teaching pro Kellie Stenzel, women who have a 7-wood in their bag can hit the ball solidly from the fairway. Use a sweeping swing when you use a fairway wood, hitting the ball just as you begin your upswing. The loft on the club will get the ball up in the air while also keeping the shot on course. Practice with this club by trying to hit the top of the grass blades before you swing at a ball on the fairway.

Longer Clubs for Extra Distance

Once you have gotten confidence in your golf swing and overall game, take advantage of physics to use longer clubs with more flex to get added distance. The longer your club, the farther you will stand away from the ball. This will allow you to generate more club head speed at impact. This is the main factor for getting distance on your shots. The faster you can get your club head moving when it makes contact with the ball, the farther it will go. You need to be at a point where you are confident in your swing and hit the ball consistently. Once you get there, try using longer clubs for extra distance.
