When it comes to having a clean and clear complexion, some people have it easier than others. Different types of skin can be more resilient or less resilient in handling acne and oil buildup. But if you're determined to clear up your skin, you likely will be able to do it without prescription medications. A lot of your complexion's health relates to your lifestyle and to personal hygiene. By making small adjustments and taking care of your skin, you should be able to enjoy a blemish-free complexion.

Step 1

Wash your face twice daily to remove dead skin cells, contaminants and oil, which all contribute to the development of acne, blackheads and other skin problems. Do not wash your face more than twice a day unless instructed to do so by your doctor--this can cause skin irritation and other problems, such as dryness, that can adversely affect your complexion.

Step 2

Treat skin blemishes with over-the-counter ointments once or twice a day, depending on their severity. Salicylic acid can break down the oil excreted by your skin's pores, and it also helps clear away dead skin cells that can trap oil and lead to breakouts. Benzoyl peroxide kills bacteria and dries out the oil that causes breakouts. You also can use these products as a preventative measure by treating blemish-prone locations daily.

Step 3

Use noncomedogenic, oil-free makeup and remove it at night with a makeup cleanser. "Noncomedogenic" means that the product won't clog your pores.

Step 4

Apply a moisturizing lotion daily as needed to prevent dry skin and other skin irritations. Choose a product that also contains sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage. If you have oily skin, choose an oil-free product.

Tips and Warnings

  • If a regular skin-care regimen isn't working to clear your complexion, visit your doctor or dermatologist and ask about oral antibiotics, hormone therapies or prescription-strength topical medications that might be effective at treating your particular skin blemishes.
