Acne is a common problem among teenagers and even some adults, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, and is usually evident from looking at a person's face. Pimples and cysts can also occur on other areas of the body, including the back. Back acne is most common in males, but it can affect people of both genders. Acne on the back may be hard to treat due to the constant irritation from clothing and the hard-to-reach places affected. Medications and some lifestyle modifications can help get rid of back acne.
Step 1
Wear natural fibers like cotton shirts, which let your skin breathe. Wash your clothing on a regular basis. Sweat and dirt are irritants that may cause your pores to become clogged. Clogged pores are a main cause of acne, explains the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD).
Step 2
Shower with a fragrance-free soap or cleanser to avoid irritation. If you exercise, shower soon afterward to remove sweat from your back and to prevent excessive irritation.
Step 3
Avoid carrying backpacks or other bags that come into contact with your back. Acne.org explains that friction against your back can cause a type of back acne called acne mechanica. Use a tote bag or another type of satchel that does not irritate your back acne.
Step 4
Apply acne ointments or creams containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid to acne spots on your back. Have a family member help you if you cannot reach affected areas. Topical medications of this kind can help control oil production of the sebaceous glands and kill bacteria that can cause acne to worsen. Use the topical preparations as the labeling suggests or as directed by your doctor.
Step 5
Ask your doctor about taking systemic medications to get rid of your back acne. Oral antibiotics are one type of medicine that may help your skin clear.
