Overexposure to the sun can damage your skin. The sun's powerful UV rays can penetrate deep into your skin and destroy the building blocks of your skin--collagen and elastin. Overexposure can damage your skin by causing wrinkles, liver spots, uneven skin tone and dryness. Retin-A is common prescription cream used to treat and rebuild skin that has been damaged by the sun. Applying Retin-A to your arm is a simple process.

Step 1

Take a shower in the evening to help moisten your skin and prepare it for the Retin-A cream. Use a mild moisturizing soap to clean your skin. Avoid scrubbing your skin with a loofah or other exfoliating sponge, because these materials can irritate your skin. You should apply the cream at night.

Step 2

Apply the Retin-A cream to the sun-damaged areas on your arm. Gently and slowly, massage the cream in a circular motion until it is completely absorbed. Leave the cream on your arm overnight and shower or wash it off in the morning. Use Retin-A cream as directed by your physician. Never apply Retin-A to skin which is affected by melanoma, eczema or psoriasis unless your doctor has advised you otherwise.

Step 3

Apply sunblock lotion after showering in the morning or 30 minutes before going outside. Using Retin-A will make your skin susceptible to sunburn. Apply a sunblock with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 60 or above to help protect your skin from sunburn. Using sunscreen will also help moisturize your skin and lessen skin flaking.
