If you have a low-functioning immune system or someone in your family has the flu, it's important that you boost your immune system so that you can avoid getting the flu. Eating the right foods can actually increase your immune system function so that you are better able to fight off sicknesses, such as the flu. Ask Dr. Sears explains that certain foods actually increase white blood cell production in the body, helping you fight off illness more efficiently.

Salmon

According to "Woman's Day," salmon is one of the 10 best foods to eat to boost your immune system and avoid the flu. One of the reasons that salmon can help prevent the flu is because of its omega-3 fatty acids, which enhance immune system function. Additionally, the other fish oils found in salmon are known to boost the body's immunity as well, according to "Woman's Day."

Bell Peppers

Bell peppers are an excellent source of the antioxidant vitamin C, which, according to Ask Dr. Sears, fights infection and prevents the body from getting viruses. Although some people like vitamin C supplements to prevent the flu, eating foods rich in vitamin C, such as bell peppers, can do the same trick. "Woman's Day" states that red bell peppers have twice as much vitamin C as oranges do.

Garlic

Many people love the taste and flavor of fresh garlic on their foods. Some people even eat a few cloves of garlic a day for its health benefits. Ask Dr. Sears reports that eating garlic stimulates the body to multiply white blood cells so that it is easier for you to prevent the flu. You can add fresh minced garlic to pastas, grilled chicken, pizzas and even salads. Just don't forget to carry a mint.

Oysters

Most people don't eat oysters every day. In America, they are usually only eaten on special occasions. Yet eating oysters a little more often may help protect you from getting the flu. According to Ask Dr. Sears, there is 76 mg of the mineral zinc in six medium-sized oysters. The website goes on to explain that zinc helps enhance immune system function so that you are less susceptible to getting the flu.
