Ocella Side Effects

The generically named drugs ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone are combined into one medication sold in the United States under several brand names including Ocella. Ocella is an oral contraceptive used to prevent pregnancy. The Mayo Clinic reports that Ocella also may be used to treat PMDD, or premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a type of severe premenstrual syndrome. The drug may prevent pregnancy, but is not effective 100 percent. It also does not prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea and HIV.

Menstrual Problems

The most common serious side effects of taking the Ocella pill affect menstruation. The contraceptive may, for example, cause the bleeding cycle to be altered. It also may cause bleeding between periods or make bleeding heavier during periods. Sometimes menstruation skips a month here or there, or it may cease for several months. The Mayo Clinic states these side effects typically occur during only the first three months of taking Ocella, though in rare instances, they might persist longer. These are serious side effects, so they should be reported to a gynecologist.

Smoking Side Effects

There are some common serious side effects that may occur in smokers taking Ocella. Pain in the abdominal region, in the left or right side or in the stomach can be experienced. Jaundice, an ailment related to liver dysfunction, has also been reported. The signs of jaundice are a yellowing of the skin or whites of your eyes. A doctor should be alerted if these symptoms appear.

Breast Side Effects

The most serious side effect of Ocella can affect people who have had breast disease or who have a family medical history of breast disease. Lumps in the breast could develop; this should be reported to a doctor promptly. There also are non-serious side effects of Ocella that are common in many women, but should be temporary. Swelling, tenderness or pain in the breasts when taking this contraceptive pill can be experienced. Consult a doctor if these symptoms persist.
