Amanda dared to lose 50 pounds: A LIVESTRONG.COM hero

Monday, June 30th, 2008

Amanda never had problems with her weight growing up. She was one of those people who could eat whatever she felt like, and never seemed to gain any weight. But when she was 14-years-old, Amanda had her thyroid removed, because of concerns about a potentially cancerous cyst. The surgery’s after-effects were serious: Her energy level plummeted — and her weight did the opposite.

In Amanda’s own words:

I gained consistently over the next several years and by the beginning of 2007 I was weighing over 170 lbs. For the New Year, I signed up for a body shaping class. This 10 week challenge was to workout and make healthier eating choices every day. I lasted less than 2 weeks before dropping out.

In May, I went shopping for new clothes - at this point, I was looking for size 16 and tipping the scale at over 180 lbs. I had trouble finding sizes that large and walked into a plus size store. That was the moment that I really understood how much I’d gained. I’d never dreamed I’d be shopping there. So I said to myself that this was the moment that I had a choice. I needed to choose to be a healthy weight or to be a “plus size girl”

Amanda decided to make a major change in her life. She started by adding a daily breakfast to her routine —  a fruit smoothie and string cheese. She also tried to make sure she a had a couple healthy snacks each day, like yogurt, fruit, and nuts. Her typical lunch became a homemade sandwich or wrap, usually with a side of cottage cheese. She made an effort to cut out soda and mostly stick to water.

I didn’t make much of a change for dinners and weekends at that point, but by eating more sensible most of the day, I eliminated the fast foods. I feel this change helped tremendously.

Just about a year ago, in July 2007, Amanda found The Daily Plate, which is now available as The Daily Plate on LIVESTRONG.COM. At that point, she was already back down to 170 lbs. She created an account under the username Aarie.

I began TDP by setting a calorie goal, then documenting my food intake and exercise. I made additional efforts to lose weight by taking walks with the dogs or getting on the treadmill a few times per week. I also started cooking more at home. For dinner, I’d usually eat the same foods as I did before, but smaller portions. I wasn’t perfect. Sometimes I’d have a “cheat” day or even a week where I slipped. But through the forums, groups, and friends that I made, I stayed motivated to continue my journey and reminded myself this is a life change, not just a “diet.”

In May of this year, Amanda had reached 130 lbs, the result of nearly a year of smarter food choices and an increase in her physical activity. That month, she walked down the aisle, wearing a size 6 wedding gown! Amanda says that she’s much happier and more energetic than she has ever felt before:

I can run without losing my breath and I even have less problems with seasonal asthma and allergies. I’m very passionate about what TDP has done for me. The tools, the community, everything. Some people don’t think diet and exercise can work because it just seems so simple. But that’s really what gets the weight off and keeps it off. It’s just something you need to stick to.

What’s most inspiring about Amanda’s story is that she makes her dramatic weight loss seem so doable. She certainly doesn’t make it sound easy — she had to make some serious lifestyle changes to her diet and routine — but her story really shows that the single hardest part is daring to succeed. Once she made the decision to lose weight, Amanda knew her goal, and she equipped herself with the tools and the mentality necessary to get there.

Amanda, congratulations. The entire TDP and LIVESTRONG.COM team is thrilled about your achievement. You should be extremely proud; not only have you changed your life for the better, but you’ve undoubtedly inspired countless others to follow in your footsteps.

Amanda before and after

Hi everyone,

A bunch more LIVESTRONG.COM fixes / upgrades to share!

1. We really, truly believe that forums are finally working for everyone.

3. All the Admin links have been added to groups on LIVESTRONG.COM. You can now invite people and post new blog entries more easily to groups that you create.

4. Default avatars now appear on the forums for new members.

5. Some private groups where seemingly behaving as public on LIVESTRONG; this has been fixed.

6. Search results for foods on LIVESTRONG are more accurate.

7. Forum font size is improved in more places on LIVESTRONG.

8. MyPlate data is now synced instantly from TheDailyPlate.com to LIVESTRONG.COM and vice-versa!

More fixes and features, from Forums to MyPlate

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Here are the latest fixes and additions!

Search results for foods and brands under The Daily Plate on LIVESTRONG now behave more accurately.

Adding meals to MyPlate now works identically to adding foods; the meal is added in the “expanded” state so that you can quickly adjust its servings.

The water tracker image now defaults to the right number of glasses when you come back to MyPlate, instead of starting with the empty water glass if you’ve already tracked water.

The forum font is now less enormous. (We have noted an issue where some members don’t see the forums at all. If you have a forum issue, please let us know here and be sure to mention your username!)

We’ve also added search links and other useful shortcuts to the top of the forum navigation.

Fixes, Features, and Privacy Enhancements

Friday, June 20th, 2008
  1. Preferences regarding how your name looks on your LIVESTRONG.COM profile have been fixed. You can choose to show everyone your real name, only your friends, or no one at all, right from the Preferences page.
  2. Private photos are now longer accessible when you email friends links to specific photos. Thanks to member cleardc for pointing out this issue.
  3. The “recent comments” module in individual Groups now only shows comments from that specific group, as expected.
  4. “Things I Do Regularly” on MyPlate works even more reliably.
  5. Food items you log on MyPlate no longer appear in your Friends Feed updates if your food diary is marked as private. (That’s a mouthful!)
  6. Some users who originally registered at the standalone version of The Daily Plate couldn’t login to LIVESTRONG.COM successfully. That’s been fixed.
  7. Some users had an issue while editing their LIVESTRONG profiles. The system would tell them that their email address was invalid — but you weren’t even editing your email address! This affects a few accounts where your email address actually went missing — a flaw that itself has now been fixed. So, when editing your profile, if you see that your email address is missing or blank, just fill it in to make sure we save your profile changes.
  8. Speaking of profile changes, some members could edit their profiles all they wanted, but nothing would save. This, too, has been fixed.
Wow. As you can see, our tech team doesn’t slack on Fridays, and they worked their hearts out to make sure all these fixes were in before the weekend.
There’s still plenty more work to be done, and our team shows no signs of stopping! Enjoy the weekend, and as always, let us know your thoughts!

New profile features and a few more bug fixes

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

A bunch of updates to share, so let’s get right to it!

1. You can now rearrange elements on your profile.
I, for example, love the Friends Feed, so I dragged mine higher up on my profile. I’ve also moved My Groups above my Friends List, because that’s more convenient for me. You can adjust the layout by clicking on the headers of profile modules and dragging them. Note that currently the top three modules are not movable.

2. Your last name is no longer required when editing your profile.
We thought we had this one fixed yesterday, but it still gave some members problems. Today, it is definitely fixed and working properly!

3. “What I Do Regularly” — a log of fitness activities you frequently track on MyPlate — is now working properly.
Most users weren’t having a problem, but if you’re a regular fitness tracker and you were
affected, you will be thrilled to know that this is fixed now!

As always, we value your feedback — let us know what you think!

Great blog post from Lance

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

LIVESTRONG.COM Advisory Board Chairman Lance Armstrong wrote a great blog post about the launch of this site:

LIVESTRONG.COM is not just another web site packed with health information and expert advice. In my opinion, there is plenty of information already out there and furthermore, sitting at your desk surfing the web is not the key to a healthy, active life. LIVESTRONG.COM aspires to be a totally interactive community, where you can connect with people of similar interests and health concerns and obtain easy to find, specific advice from respected experts. We’ve made a strong effort to have the tone of the site be upbeat and motivating, rather than dry and academic. Consider this distressing news from a recent survey fielded by Harris Interactive: 86% of Americans attempt healthy lifestyle changes but only 46% are successful. I don’t think this failure rate is due to lack of knowledge, but instead with a flawed approach. As an athlete, I know it’s easy to set goals – whether it’s winning the Tour de France, lowering my marathon time or trying to eat a little healthier. The hard part is follow-through: staying focused and motivated over the long term. We envision you using LIVESTRONG.COM to get motivated, focused and then take real-life, decisive action to achieve your goals.

New features and a host of bug fixes

Wednesday, June 18th, 2008

LIVESTRONG.COM launched to the world just yesterday, but we haven’t started relaxing just yet. The team here has been hard at work behind-the-scenes on a host of feature improvements and bug fixes. Here are some recent upgrades that went live today:

  1. The water tracker on The Daily Plate’s MyPlate section no longer adds dozens (or hundreds!) of glasses on its own. Instead, it only adds glasses of water when you tell it to!
  2. When you add a food to MyPlate, we now automagically highlight the “servings” field, so that you can immediately update how many servings of that food you ate. As an added bonus, if the food you tracked would be too far down on the page to see right away, we’ll actually bounce you down the page so that you can see it without needing to scroll.
  3. Deleting fitness items from MyPlate now works as expected.
  4. If you originally registered at The Daily Plate standalone site, your profile data should now by more accurately synced. (Some of you were missing friends from TDP.)
  5. Your TDP Food Diary now has a new privacy setting: You can limit its readership to just your friends here on LIVESTRONG.COM.
  6. You are no longer required to include your last name on your profile. Your privacy settings will let you dictate whether your name is shown on your profile at all.
  7. The “Ideal Weight Calculator,” which was actually the “Laughably Inaccurate And Woefully Erroneous Calculator,” has been pulled from the site until it can be repaired. We apologize to those of you who used that calculator and saw its clearly incorrect results.
There’s a lot more in store! Stay tuned for more great features and fixes from the LIVESTRONG.COM team! We value your input; please let us know what you think!

Action Plan becomes My Dares, The Daily Plate on LIVESTRONG Launches

Monday, June 16th, 2008

We made a couple major changes under the hood yesterday, in anticipation of tomorrow’s public launch of LIVESTRONG.COM!

First, you’ll notice that your Action Plan is now called My Dares. LIVESTRONG.com is all about daring to change your life, so we thought the renaming made a lot of sense. You can give yourself a dare (like quit smoking, run a marathon, or get more sleep), or you can dare someone else. Read more about LIVESTRONG dares, and let us know what you think!

Important note for BETA testers: As part of this change to “My Dares,” some of the challenges on your Action Plan may need to be set again as Dares. You can find all the Dares right here.

We also officially launched The Daily Plate on LIVESTRONG last night. The Daily Plate is an application that lets you set a daily calorie goal, track the foods you eat each day, and achieve your weight goal — whether you want to lose weight, gain weight, or maintain. The best part is, our database of foods has more than 348,000 items. So whether you want to track a Big Mac, chocolate milk, or a California roll, you’ll find it in our database, and we’ll already know the nutrition facts!

There are a lot more LIVESTRONG.com features and announcements coming soon. We’ll keep you posted right here!
