5 Fitness Tips from Venus Williams
We caught up with Venus Williams and her trainer, Samantha Monus, at the Jamba Juice FiTrends Fitness Expo at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica, Calif. It was a sunny day for a hands-on look at the latest fitness trends. After we sweated our way through a few fitness routines, we asked Venus and her trainer for a few tips on how to stay fit. They let us in on their secrets to staying healthy, toned and happy!
1. Get out of the Gym
Williams doesn't use many machines at the gym, instead she likes to do full body workouts. She said that she's not a fan of slow, boring gym routines and that she favors workouts that are "exciting and fast-paced," like plyometric routines, swimming and sprints.
2. Eat to Energize
Williams packs in protein before a workout. As a vegan, she grabs plant-based protein shakes, beans or nuts to sustain energy. She says she eats 200 calories within thirty minutes after a workout. Williams's trainer stresses that she is very disciplined with her plant-based diet, and she enjoys a variety of juices for energy. "She balances the right proteins to keep her sustained throughout the day," Monus says. She also suggests drinking a cup of hot water with lemon in the morning to hydrate and flush out the body.
3. Imagine a Toned Tummy
What motivates Williams to stay in great shape? "Flat stomachs motivate me," she says. And who doesn't love to fit into their favorite skinny jeans? Williams does a lot of tummy tightening workouts and she loves stability routines on exercise balls for tight abs and core strength. Monus suggests plank variations and knee pulls to really accentuate the core while pivoting the hips.
4. Organize Your Workouts
Williams knows how hard it can be to stay on track. She plans goals and milestones ahead of time and sticks to a schedule. Monus suggests that you write everything down and keep track of your tasks and workouts. "Every success comes from good strategy," she says.
5. Stay Motivated
"When you feel good, you look good," Monus says. She stresses that staying on track with your fitness goals will make you feel confident and ready to take on the world. The key to staying motivated? Spend a minute or two each day visualizing your goals and imagining what it would feel like to reach them.
