The Virgin Diet and 7 Foods That May Be Hurting You

Yes, that really is my name. (Well, JJ is my nickname!) I am a nutrition and fitness expert and a 30-year (wow, when did that happen) veteran of the industry. Everything I do was put to the test last September when my 16-year-old son Grant became the victim of a hit-and-run while out walking, He was run down by a car going 40 miles per hour and left for dead in the road.
We airlifted Grant to the local hospital, where doctors told us there was nothing they could do. If we airlifted him again to a hospital that could do aortic repair that he needed, he had a less than 1% (actually .25%) chance of even surviving, much less ever waking up or being normal.
Grant went through 3 weeks of ICU, 2 months in a trauma center, and he's now at a rehab center. One hundred days after this nightmare occurred, my son is walking, working out, and laughing. He is on track for a miraculous 100% (I like to think 110%) recovery.
During this process, I realized how much bigger The Virgin Diet is than I could have ever imagined. The night of the accident, at midnight, we went against medical advice and made the decision to fight and save Grant's life. I spent 12-15 hours every day for weeks in the ICU. (So sterilized that if you are sick, you can't visit.)
Of the 100 days he has been in the hospital, I have been there at least 75, averaging 10-12 hours a day, while launching my New York Times bestselling book, The Virgin Diet, a PBS special based on the book, and doing some expert work on several television shows.
I couldn't have possibly done this if I wasn't in extremely good health. It has been a serious marathon, and I always joke that I hate endurance training. (I far prefer burst style sprint training!) I've had to be healthy, energetic, focused, and present during all of it.
Staying strong through Grant's traumatic situation made me realize how much bigger and more crucial it is that we put our health first so that when a big opportunity or a big challenge presents itself, we are ready to take it on!
