Today is National Dog Appreciation Day (August 26), and my two dogs, Maggie and Zelda, are sprawled out on plush faux fur pillows to nap, luxuriate and be pampered. (Yes, today is really just like any other day of the year.)

Having a dog is good for your health — dog ownership is associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease as well as lower levels of stress and lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

With all that they do for us, our dogs do deserve to be celebrated and thanked. Wondering how to celebrate National Dog Day? Here are 20 ideas.

Yes, we feel grateful for these dog-oriented perks.

To create this national doggy appreciation ranking, Milo’s Kitchen dog treats surveyed 3,000 dog people to determine how regularly they engage in thankful, grateful and loving behaviors with their dogs (such as buying regular gifts for their dogs, petting their dogs and telling their dogs "I Love You.")
