What Tax Day Can Tell You About Your Diet Strategy
What do taxes and weight loss have in common? More than you might imagine! I have come to realize that people prepare their taxes in the same way they manage their diets.
There are generally two types of people when it comes to preparing taxes:
1. Those who keep track of their income, expenses, and receipts in a very systematic way throughout the year.
2. Those who scramble and wait until the very last second to get their finances in order for tax day.
I find there are two types of people when it comes to weight loss:
1. Those who track calories daily (perhaps using easy online apps such as MyPlate), work out consistently and are happy losing 1 to 2 pounds per week with a healthy approach.
2. Those who wait until two weeks before an important event — like a wedding — to go on a crash diet, exercise voraciously, stop eating carbohydrates and starve themselves in order to squeeze into the perfect dress or suit!
Do you see the similarities?
This year I discovered that a lot of my friends who organize their taxes at the last minute are also the people who do those crazy fad, crash diets. And the people who prepare for taxes all throughout the year in a very organized fashion, are the ones who use healthy plans for weight loss.
The real question however, is not which type of person you are, but rather, are you happy being this type of person? Do you enjoy being totally stressed out as April 15 heads your way? Do you enjoy starving your body of calories and nutrients to squeeze into that special outfit for one night? My guess would be no, and the good news is that you can change your behavior.
How to Plan Ahead and Take Action
If you do your taxes the week before they are due and are tired of the anxiety and pressure you feel this time of year, get a software program to assist you in managing your business finances. Set aside one day per month to input your financial information so you can stay on track! Let an accountant assist you in creating an organizational system now for your taxes next year.
The same goes for your health and weight! Don't wait until an event is approaching to go on a diet. Decide today if you are happy with your body. If you are unhappy, choose to drop those pounds for your health and not just for a particular event. Use tools like MyPlate to track calories and help you in reaching your weight loss goals. Create a workout calendar listing what workout you will do each day so you can plan to set the time aside.
Let's face it, taxes and dieting are never going to be fun. But if you plan ahead and take action all year, you will avoid unnecessary anxiety and stress in your life. Sometimes you simply have to choose to make changes in your life. I always tell my personal training clients: "Make your body happen, don't let your body happen."
