Hi. i'm lactose intolerant and was super excited to try Kraft Cracker Barrel b/c it has 0 grams lactose per serving. I STILL got gas!! Then I read that just b/c it has 0 grams per serving, doesn't mean it's lactose free. Just low lactose. I guess I'm more intolerant than I thought. Any suggestions for good lactose free cheese ( and please don't say soy b/c I hate the fake taste).
thanks!!

ps - Finlandia does make true lactose free swiss which is great.

I've had good luck with Cabot Vermont cheeses, which they carry at my local grocery chain. They are also listed as "0 grams of lactose per serving" rather than "lactose-free," but they've worked for me. My mom is very lactose intolerant, and she makes grilled cheese sandwiches with this stuff and loves it. Thanks for the tip on Finlandia.

you might not be lactose intolerant. Do lactaid pills work for you? I was mis-diagnosed for a year and continued to be sick when I ate dairy. Then I was properly diagnosed as cacian intolderant - it's the protein found in milk and milk products. So even though it's super low in lactose or lactose free (which really just means it has lactaid added to it), it still will make you sicky.

I have not found any good cheese substitutes. I've learned to live without it, and I was once a huge cheese fan. After awhile you don't miss it so much anymore. I even order pizza sans cheese, and it's delicious and very little fat.

I am extremely lactose intolerant and have been for years. Typically those us who cannot tolerate cows milk can have goat cheese and sheep cheeses, the lactose from goat and sheep is not the same as a cow, so typically goat and sheep are good alternatives if you love cheese, that will not have the same effect as the cow cheeses.

Many of you will already know, but if you want safe cheese you can eat Parmigiano Reggiano, as aged as possible. I put it everywhere, it's wonderful also on pizza, quite expensive though.
Their info: "Lactose is transformed into lactic acid at the very beginning of the maturation process as part of the process of lowering the acidity level of the cheese as a whole"

I had chocolate chip cookies today = Butter and Chocolate...

There are a couple left but after they're gone I'm off it for good...

By wpjavier on February 1, 2012 at 07:54 PM

Bahh! I had cottage cheese today, and cheese on my burger! The cheese on my burger is easy to replace but is there a substitute for cottage cheese?!

By vanessa2531 on January 19, 2012 at 11:25 PM

Dang chocolate got me again! Tomorrow will be better.

I just figured out I'm lactose Intolerant two months ago. I drink almond milk or soy for my coffee. I've found some cheese that has 0 lactose in it.

I miss my greek yogurt and honey more then I can express. Giving up Ice cream..well I think that's just good for me anyway.

So I'm taking the dare because - I need to do it.

By abyssalmissile on January 4, 2012 at 01:08 PM

Yogurt is safe for us! The cultures have consumed the lactose in the dairy. Eating my greek yogurt most days has actually helped my tolerance of other dairy, in fact.

So I recently became lactose intolerant (aka 3 years ago), and when it first happened I couldn't eat anything dairy for the first year or so. Though now I have been reintroducing some dairy products into my diet slowly. Now the only time it bothers me is when I happen to overdue the dairy products.

I don't know if this is just a freak of nature or if it will work for anyone. Just now I am able to eat about half a cup of milk a day. Hopefully at the end of the year I will be up to a cup.

By starcrossed on January 21, 2010 at 09:20 PM

Bought some lactose-free milk at the store...but a pint of 7/11 ice cream and some chocolate got the best of me. But it was good.

By Robin_G on February 24, 2010 at 10:03 PM

For next time you crave chocolate... try dark chocolate! Most dark chocolate has less or no milk products. Dove dark chocolate bars are sooo yummy and creamy. I made the switch to dark chocolate years ago when I first started having problems with dairy, but I couldn't give up the chocolate... now milk chocolate tastes wimpy and too sweet to me, not nearly chocolatey enough! LOL And there are LOTS of great non-dairy ice creams out there too, try some! Purely Decadent has both soy milk and coconut milk ice creams, I like the coconut best, it's so rich and creamy! Luna and Larry's is also a great coconut milk ice cream. Rice Dream is also yummy.

Okay I'm lactose Intolerant too, but I found an easy way to control it, and I think it might work for you too.

I don't drink sodas anymore, the occasional Sprite. But, I found that the acidity in Sprite actually coax the digestive track, so the dairy product (ice cream for me) will break down and pass through like every other food particle.

SO If you haven't, try drinking Sprite anytime you eat dairy. Eat out a lot sprite only, NO flavored TEA the syrup in them is just like eating dairy, well for me it is.

I only recently became lactose intolerant. After I first realized what it was, I'd find myself ordering something loaded with cheese and then having to haul the poor waitress back to change everything. If I did cheat then I'd lie in bed with severe cramps before I got enough energy to head to the bathroom and moan my way through a sleepless night. Milk hasn't been a problem since I was force fed it as a kid, but cheese is an evil force. If my body could handle it, I could live off cheese and potatoes alone. Ice cream is evil too. I think the severity of my reactions have helped curb the appetite. Now I can buy ice cream for the kids or DiGiorno's for dinner and not always (sometimes) feel gyped. Is this related to weight? Have lactose intolerant people lost weight and been able to return to cheese?

By juliette_eliza on July 15, 2011 at 12:47 PM

Nope, it's not weight related at all. Your body likely doesn't produce the enzyme lactase anymore, which breaks down the lactose so you can digest it. As a result, since your body can't break it down, it "expels" it.

You can take supplements and probiotics to break down the lactose for you, but they don't always work and they're expensive. I'd recommend looking for alternative items to buy like coconut ice cream and soy cheeses.

I am lactose intolerant and I just cant stop eating dairy. I am ill all the time and its driving me crazy :(

By juliette_eliza on July 15, 2011 at 12:44 PM

Have you tried any of the alternatives? How about lactase supplements? They're expensive and don't work for everyone but it's worth a try.

By julitosato on April 10, 2011 at 04:51 PM

Ok, so, I don't know what to do...

Going from vegan to vegetarian is quite difficult for my belly...
Anyone here experiencing something of the kind?

You are probably lactose intolerant, it's common for people who stop consuming it over a period of time to become intolerant because your body stops producing the enzymes to break it down since it doesn't need them anymore. Unfortunately, people rarely ever begin producing them again, although some women find that during and after a pregnancy they can tolerate milk again.

You can get a test from your doctor to know for sure.

By sarakathryn76 on May 27, 2011 at 11:39 AM

FYI, many pills contain lactose, I think as part of the coating. I had to stop taking birth control pills due to this. Once I quit them, my gas immediately went away. Cheese of any sort is not an option...nor is Lactaid milk, at least for me. Any tiny amount gets me every time. I thought I'd do okay with a piece of cake last weekend...NOT! It was store bought and there must've been milk in it or in the icing. BOO!

By juliette_eliza on July 15, 2011 at 12:40 PM

The icing for sure-- most of it is just cream and sugar.

I even found lactose in many generic brands of Imodium-- kinds defeats the purpose of taking it for me... Fortunately I've recently started taking levsin (prescribed by my doctor) and it's worked wonders on allowing me to eat small amounts again.

By juliette_eliza on July 15, 2011 at 12:36 PM

I just wanted to share that the introduction of coconut ice creams has been a wonderful thing for me. I had long since given up on finding a creamy and satisfying ice cream substitute, but I finally have!

Larry and Luna's Coconut Bliss is by far my favorite.

By flying13 on April 11, 2010 at 05:07 PM

I've been doing this for over two years now! I avoid milk products and soy products like the plague (the pain from eating either is just not worth it)!!! I just found this website...I sure wish I had found it years ago...it really would have helped me in the beginning! It sucks because I am 100% lactose intolerant...I can't do cheese or ice cream or yogurt...nothing! Not even a little bit of lactose in bread...seems to make life harder than it needs to be. I'm also intolerant to soy...everything has soy these days...it's so lame...and I don't personally know anyone else with my problem...such a lonely existance...and the food planning sucks! I live in fear of food.... :-(

By sarakathryn76 on June 22, 2011 at 11:57 AM

Me too, to ALL of it! No milk, no soy makes life very complicated and eating at restaurants nearly impossible. I ask a lot of questions and the waiters/waitresses get noticeably annoyed and my company seems uncomfortable...I even had to stop taking my birth control pills because they contained lactose. To add to it, I've also discovered allergies to apples, bananas, onions, olives, coffee, pears, hops (boo) and a few other things. I rely heavily on rice, almond and coconut products. I feel your pain.

By Anonymous on January 7, 2011 at 08:18 PM

I "cheat" my lactose-free diet with S.O. Delicious coconut milk products. The vanilla ice cream is great, and I also use the coffee cream and milk for baking. It's definitely fattening but helps me avoid the Ben N Jerry's binges that are SO regretful!

By sarakathryn76 on June 22, 2011 at 11:52 AM

I'm right there with you on the SO Delicious coconut milk ice cream. It is so delicious that I am a bit addicted. Good thing I work out. As far as milk goes, I am happy with Almond Breeze almond beverage. It has worked great for everything I've used it for and I drink it by the glass.

By sarakathryn76 on June 22, 2011 at 11:44 AM

I've had excellent control until two days ago when I asked for NO cheese or sour cream in my grilled stuffed chicken burrito yesterday and discovered when I ate the second half yesterday there was cheese in it. That explained my gas and cramping the night before. Grrrrrr.....
