Does anyone know where there is a red cross in eastern Oregon?

By shirkey on August 19, 2009 at 10:21 PM

Maybe you found a place at school already, but start by entering your zip code at givelife.org. If that doesn't turn up anything (it often doesn't...redcross is by far not the only place to donate) there's an aabb.org link offered that has another chance to search by zip.

I've been donating whole blood off and on (around pregnancies and nursing) for years. I tried a platelet donation (first time) last Tuesday, but apparently my blood clotted in the needle and I couldn't get above 1.7. Frustrating to waste everyone's time. Now I have a respiratory/sinus infection, so it'll be a little while before I give it another go.

Next donation scheduled August 24th--number 77.

only just scraped in on iron 120.

I've been donating since 1995-ish, up to 22 units. Despite my issue with rolling veins (yeah, it's fun, let's wiggle that needle around until it gets in the vein), I still go every 56 days! I've been concerned about my iron levels since becoming a vegetarian, but no issues yet! I think my levels are actually higher now. Next donation: October 6th.

Good luck! I've been a vegetarian since I've been old enough to donate and I've never had issues with iron levels, so I hope the same is true for you!

I am O neg and had been barred for 6 months because iron levels too low but have decided to up my iron for the week before donating.
Can only donate every 14 weeks in Australia

By KyashiAmara on August 4, 2009 at 09:28 AM

I donate every 8 weeks but my office had a blood drive and being O+ they asked for me to give 2 units, So i did. I was worried my iron would be low but i was grateful i was able to give. They warned me i would be cold but i was freezing when i received the return... i plan to donate 2 units every 16 weeks. Still helping people in need but less needle pricks.

I went down to donate platelets yesterday but my iron was too low (by 2 points). I'm scheduled to try again next week.

I tried to give 3 times and my hemo was low and then I got lazy about seeing if I can donate. I am on vacation so when I get back I will get off my duff and get back to trying.

Yay for blood donors and I say this as a 6 pint recipient. If it weren't for generous donors, I probably wouldn't be here :)
I dontate every 56 days like clockwork! It's such a good feeling.

I work in a blood bank and see how much good these products - platlets, plasma, blood and cryo - do for people everyday.

Today I gave a 1 pound baby blood to keep him alive. Keep donating, it's a gift!

I'll be eligible to donate again soon.

I now give platelets since 2006
You can give both just have toget the timeing right
Next wednesday Platelets

By countingthreads on July 7, 2009 at 09:25 AM

Yeah, I tried that, but the apheresis center asked me to stop donating whole blood because of my high platelet count. I'm one of their most reliable high donors. Also, I found when I did that it really did a number on my iron levels and I ended up not being able to donate either. But that's great that it works for you!

By countingthreads on July 2, 2009 at 09:31 AM

Hi. I don't donate whole blood anymore. I discovered that I have an extremely high platelet count and in pint of platelet donation they get three doses of platelets for cancer patients out of me. Since my dad, grandfather, aunt, uncle, and best friend's son all died of cancer, my husband had testicular cancer, my brother has multiple myeloma, and so on, this is what I do. I hope you don't mind if I count my platelet pints... I can donate more frequently and do more good.
