Just reread my post. I should have added that is my sunday pattern, not every day of the week!!

By Anonymous on April 2, 2012 at 08:20 AM

Yesterday: Had 4 (well poured) glasses of wine. One mid afternoon, the other 3 during dinner and after. I guess that is a lot, though in the past couple months I've been drinking something along the lines of a couple of glasses at lunch/afternoon, then often an entire bottle making/eating/after dinner. Today there is no reason to drink anything. That is my goal. 2julesnyc

Technical questions - I have posted a few times (as Anonymous) but now want to user name so there is continuity... but I don't know how to change from Anonymous. Second, how do you respond to someone who has replied to one of your own posts?
thx! (2julesnyc)

By hiprhyme on March 31, 2012 at 09:25 AM

not sure about changing from anon. but to reply to someone who has replied to you... just reply to your original post, and it will put your comment underneath the latest post in the string. it looks weird click reply right there underneath your original post, but that will do it.

Thank you on the reply question.
A solid day here. Drank 3 glasses of wine (just over half a bottle) which for a saturday is good. Ate more than usual again though - the after dinner hand to mouth thing. Normally it doesn't occur to me to snack (why snack when I can drink?). I suppose i just need to trust the process on this part. 2julesnyc

Well the last couple of days not so great on the drinking front. On Tuesday, went out to dinner. Said to myself 2 glasses of wine and then no continued drinking once I got home. Ended up having 3, then 2 more when I got home so that would be a bottle. Last night, at home, had a half bottle in the fridge. Said to myself ok, that half bottle is all yours but that is it. Ended up chilling another bottle in the freezer and drinking over half of that. Today is a new day, right? Probably the best thing to do today is not drink at all, because clearly once I start I can't stop. Would love some advice/support.

i'm that way a lot; drinking and not stopping. even when i say at the beginning that i'm going to limit myself to a certain amount. what has worked for me is simply not keeping a supply in the house. cuz if i know it's there, i'll end up drinking it.

i used to do that too. i loved getting back after a night out and continue the party at home with another drink or two.
what works (for me), is to drink a liter of water at a go. that helps dilute the alcohol in the stomach (and so, the desire for another drink), bloats you up with all that water and leaves no room for another drink. besides, it helps with the dehydration and hangover the next morning. try it out.
but really, i think all these tricks dont help with the underlying issue. is it the love of alcohol, boredom, an addiction or something else? answer that first. and then decide the way forward.

you know what keeps me from not drinking some evenings? a terrible hangover from the drinking binge the last night! ha ha ha.
seriously though, am down to drinking 2 nights per week now. way better than when i was drinking every night.

By hiprhyme on March 30, 2012 at 05:32 AM

today ends my 5th week of 1-2 drinks per evening on weeknights!

Congrats! I am at the beginning... didn't drink anything yesterday and nothing today. Though may sip on a liquer shortly - kids in bed now. I am not a raging alcoholic by any means, just have seen things get a little too excessive over the past year and want to not continue down that path. (2julesnyc)

Hi- i was drinking every night literally. at home (a bit controlled), but when i went outside, i almost always came back very high or drunk. it came to a point, where without alcohol, it wasn't fun at all! worse, i smoke a lot too.
my partner started telling me that i was drinking and smoking too much. i went into denial and started drinking when i was by myself. and i started controlling myself when i went out. so even if i was drunk, i somehow managed to give the impression that i wan only high.
slowly realization struck that it was becoming a problem. i loved drinking by myself and when i went out. when i was sad, stressed, angry, after a fight, happy, just needed a drink after a heavy day and so on.
then someone told me- quit drinking for a day and tell yourself that you'll get through today without it. do this every day. i did. i still do. its hard some days. but not so much other days.
i use things to combat the driving need for it- eat my dinner the moment the desire to drink strikes- even when i go out, read a good book and immerse myself in it, move away from the liquor cabinet or the fridge with the beer, drink gallons of plain club soda when i feel the need for whiskey. and this all helps! it stops me from reaching out for the bottle.
though i still drink when i go out and sometimes at home on a sunday afternoon (2-3 beers), i go many days without it too. i guess i will fall off the wagon sometimes, but i'm determined to fight this demon.
i still smoke as much though. so that's next on the list!!!

Okay 2 gin and tonics tonight. Feel like another one. Grr! Does anyone find that they eat more when they are trying to drink less? What is that about?

By hiprhyme on March 26, 2012 at 08:33 PM

actually, it's just the opposite for me. when i'm drinking, i end up eating more.

Only 1 drink last night as I was preparing dinner! My trigger today will be coming home from work. Usually within 5 minutes I have a glass of wine in my hand.

According to addiction experts, anything over 2 drinks a day is a drinking problem. AA is a great place to learn more about addiction and the process. If it is controlling your choices or you feel you need it to cope with life, you have more than just a need to cut down, you have a need to quit. One day at a time, even one minute at time, but it can be done. If cutting down in the past hasn't kept you from abusing in the present, you have a problem that can't be solved by determination. Just the fact you were planning ahead should be a huge red flag that this is the addiction process at work in your life and not just a problem of over indulgence. Seriously, if you really want change in your life you need to seek out help at least in AA if not a treatment program.
