Eat less sodium to reduce blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight. Too much salt in the diet can trigger cravings, make you retain water and create a dietary imbalance.

Homemade Stromboli very good but high in sodium with the meatballs and tomato paste.

I have learned to make my own tomato sauces for this very reason! It is true that the healthier (from scratch) one eats, the lower the sodium will be! Good luck with your efforts!

By ShadySally on January 1, 2011 at 10:18 AM

2163 for New Year's Eve Friday ... not good! Over 50 and overweight, doctor says maximum of 1500/day. 2011 will see me striving to achieve this every day!

Ate the Arby's All American Roastburger instead of the double meat Roastburger. All American had too much sodium. Had to go non salt for dinner. Had a banana and no salt almonds. Should have had the double meat roastburger.

Over 2000 already today. Have not spent a single day under recommended. Maybe I eat too much cheese?

People who are successful at this: what are your "go-to" foods for lunch and snacks? Those seem to be my worst spots.

My fav is the Nabisco hint of salt crackers. They have less sodium than the unsalted tops.

2701 up and down but lower than last time.

By ShadySally on December 16, 2010 at 08:10 AM

Wednesday... 879! Eating naturally, but yummy too!

Hi - Thanks for the encouragement and the tips. What have you been reading re too much sodium? Any books? I would be interested in reading up on this.

By MXHOWA on December 15, 2010 at 04:36 PM

!! Hey! closer to acceptable. only about 1800 mg which is only about 150 over rec for me. This is exciting.

By MXHOWA on December 14, 2010 at 06:55 PM

!! I am apparently incorrigble. Overate like crazy today and sodium is also through the roof. Even candy has it - who knew? Feta cheese, yes, I would have guessed but candy? I think if I can control the sodium, then I can control pretty much anything in re my eating habits. Going to keep working at this one day at a time.

Keep trying! The results for waistline and heart health soooo worth getting this number low!

By ShadySally on December 14, 2010 at 09:57 AM

Monday, 1334!

By MXHOWA on December 14, 2010 at 06:56 PM

That's impressive. You seem to be good at this. What are your methods for keeping it so low? I don't really add salt to food - well, not much - and I don't eat a lot of processed foods really so not sure how it's happening but man! everyday I find I have eaten way too much sodium. Any advice would be appreciated. MH

I've become an avid reader of nutrition labels! And learned over the months what food choices work for me, my weight loss goals, my desire for health. And the more I read about the huge sodium amounts we're putting in our bodies ... and the way it's destroying our health, I'm just more and more focused on this issue.

And pretty generically, if you're overweight and have high blood pressure, consuming no more than 1500 mg a day is the order of the day.
