not sure whether to put yes or no... which probably means i should check no. i spent pretty much all day lounging around the house relaxing, but i think it's made me more stressed in the back of my head because i know i have to do all my work tomorrow. weird how sometimes NOT relaxing is less stressful than relaxing...
I agree. Right now I am "relaxing" by reading these posts, but I keep on thinking about how I should be reading my accounting and sociology books tonight. :D
I dare to reduce stress in my life.
If I'm going to reduce stress, I have to know what it is. What is my definition of stress? What, specifically, makes me feel stressed-out? I think stress is ramped-up anxiety, or anxiety that continues too long.
What causes me to feel anxious? Doing something I know I don't really want to do. And not doing something I believe I should be doing. That dissonance between thought and action, between what I believe and what I do, is (for me) the prime source of anxiety. And when I let an anxiety-causing situation continue, the result is stress.
The corrosive effects of ongoing, unrelieved stress are as damaging to my health as smoking, poor eating habits and lack of exercise have been. So handling stress is an important addition to my efforts to improve my health by quitting smoking, eating more wisely and getting up off my butt.
If I'm going to do something every day to handle stress, what does that mean? Either do something constructive that I've been putting off, pay attention to or take care of something I've been neglecting, or restrain myself from doing something that I know is bad for me.
So shredding, bagging and disposing of a single pile of junk mail; going to the dentist; being aware when I'm about to complain or make some other negative remark and saying something upbeat (or at least neutral) instead: these are all positive choices which reduce stress in my life by bringing my beliefs and my actions into closer alignment.
That's all I wanted to establish in this first Handling Stress journal entry: what IS stress? why should I handle it? how can I handle it?
I like to hit the weights relegiously [or when God lets me have the strength to do so, swimming, jogging, preety much anything physical.. i go n drink me 1 beer n smoke a cigaret
Eileen, there are a couple other "drivers" (at leasr those I face with): lack of sleep - compounding as being sleep-deprived would increase anxiety (as you have described). And to manager that you would need to prioritize those (and more) things you have listed ..
As to saying positive instead of negative, I use this with my son: "Unless you have something GOOD to say, don't say anything" ... (unless. like me, you are doing Performance Review with your employee at work ... :) and it is unavoidable, then make as constructive as possible).
I love your approach - I have got to know who your "enemy is before the battle"!
Good luck!
Irina
For whichever reason could not find serenity today ... everything was a bit irritating ... Hmmm ...
I think my hormones got a bit out of whack .. or it is too much stress plus change in weather ... it is hard to control my emontions .. last couple dayss ... let's see if relaxing teas would help ..
Was pretty good all day, but then had a nerves' breakdown out of blue ... for about 2 min ... Hmmm ... just need mroe sleep ...
I focused on reducing my stress level by doing cross word puzzles, talking through my stress, and deep breathing
Getting really way to fired up at work ... so need to re-focus on calming down ... need a break!
