I had to pay my cell phone bill today and I bought groceries so I spent way over my goal. But I actually went and bought groceries, which I definitely need to do more, so that was good.

We turn all our electrical appliances off at the wall when they are not being used except for the vcr because of re-programming the clock everytime (and the refridgerator for obvious reasons). It has cut our electricity bills by 25%. Thats a nice bit of money saved.

I need to make a monthly/yearly budget. I'm not sure where all of our money goes, and I need to figure that out before I can find places to cut, right?

You're right. Don't just track your primary expenses, track "everything" right down to the 25 cents into the gumball machine. Once you figure out where your money is going you'll start to see what you "don't need". "Needs" and "Wants" will help you to prioritize what you can cut out and what has to stay. Good luck!

I wrote down everything and I mean everything. Only did it for a few weeks but it soon became really obvious where I could cut back on the spending. Good luck!!!

I'm going to stop spending on books because I have more than enough books to last me many years. The amount I spend monthly on books is obscene. I am officially on book buying ban...

I also want to kill all my short-term debts, especially credit card charges.

?? ailee77 - could you sell some of your old books and recoup some of your money - might help with paying off your credit cards ??

Sell them on Amazon!

Join the library. I was spending a huge amount on books too. Now I get all that I want for free.

I decided to become an online fitness coach for Beachbody (makers of P90X). The additional income allows me to save more money but keep my current lifestyle. For more info go to www.beachbodycoach.com/fitbyx or feel free to email me if you have questions.

We have a bowl for all our loose change, and when it starts getting full, I put it into coin rolls. Then I take the coin rolls to work & use them for charity donations whenever they come up (i.e. for breast cancer week, we had a pink bagel breakfast, & I donated a roll of quarters). This is easy for me since I don't want to break open the coin roll to spend it in the vending machines or at a store somewhere.

Hard to secretly put back $$ when someone else holds the "purse strings."

My sister had to hide her savings from her hubby b/c he couldn't hold onto any money & was constantly bouncing checks.

She was a waitress, and every night at the end of her shift, she could stash 10% of her tips in an envelope behind her daughter's dresser, so her husband "never knew that cash existed" - he just thought she was a bad waitress LOL

She saved up enough to buy a couch in a few months. When the hubby came home & saw the new couch, he didn't even ask where she got the money to pay for it - which is exactly why they don't share a bank account.

I'm not even going grocery shopping this week - we have a freezer full of random stuff like frozen veggies & chicken, plus plenty of lentils & oatmeal in the cabinets. No running to the store to buy something small like pesto and coming home with a cart full of specialty stuff - we are keeping it simple this week and eating what we already have!

I stopped buying booze to keep in the house since my job has free happy hours almost weekly. Helps cut down on the waistline and prevents me from blowing $50 on a bar tab!

Now if I could only get the boyfriend to go along with this...

I am a college student, so saving money is very difficult for me. I guess overall I would like to reduce stupid expenses like fast food. Today I did go get some quiznos, which was delicious, but overall expensive and bad for me healthwise. I save money and eat healthier by eating at home...

By alfsgirl on October 31, 2009 at 10:06 AM

I highly recommend whole wheat wraps, spread some natural peanut butter down the middle and stuff with a banana, then wrap it up & you can eat it on your way to class! This is how I got thru grad school, very healthy, cheap & easy to make quickly. It will give you energy to get through the day, or at least until you can make it to the dining hall/ your kitchen.

Today will be my first day of starting to save money. I will try to cut finances and save, will open a saving account to start, put any extra money in there. Hopefully I can do this because I spend money like crazy and I never have much to begin with.
