Well, it's headed in the wrong direction, but for the right reason-- we paid the first deposit to the title company so now there's only $26,000 in savings... gonna get a lot lower before it starts climbing again though...
20$ transferred into my new savings account! Almost half way to my goal. Small, but that's all I want right now.
A goal is a goal-- starting small is better because the thrill of reaching the early goal will help motivate you to shoot for the bigger ones.
Need to save for our vacation to Mexico Jan 2012! Not only do we get our first vacation, but I can celebrate my weightloss on the beaches!
$18,000 as of today.
And we're talking to an agent and have started looking at houses... I'm feeling nervous about draining my savings to buy a house, but that's what we were saving for in the first place...
I'm looking forward to owning my house, but I'll be sad when I have to bring my little yellow line all the way to ZERO again!
how did u save so much?
how did u save so much?
how did u save so much?
One dollar at a time... literally!
I started by creating a budget, listing all of my bills first: rent, utilities, insurance, car payment, credit card debt. Then I added my needs: food, medications, gas; then my wants: internet, netflix, etc. Then I figured out how much from each paycheck needed to go to those items, I basically created a "paycheck-to-paycheck" budget. Then, everything that was left over each week I transferred to my savings account. It started as just a few dollars here and there, if I spent $47 of food when I budgeted $50, I transferred the extra $3 to savings.
Then as I got better at planning I was able to add more and more each week, I lowered the expenses that I could, eliminating some of my "wants" in light of my bigger goal. Eventually we were able to commit 20% of our income directly to savings while continuing to pay down debt and still live comfortably, if not luxuriously. (we didn't live on ramen noodles or anything, but we also stopped getting any kind of takeout for example).
I created a budget spreadsheet I'd be happy to share if you interested, feel free to send me a private message.
Day 1 for me - please inspire me to stop spending and living from pay cheque to pay cheque. I'm old enough to know better and be more responsible! On the plus side, I have no debt but equally, I have no savings either!
Well, it's easier to build a savings when you don't have debt-- so start setting aside a little at a time-- even if it's just $5 at a time, something is better than nothing!
Pay yourself first! Decide how much you can reasonably live on each month and how much you should put aside and do it as soon as you get your paycheck. My employer even allows me to split my direct deposit to two accounts, so I can take an amount for savings right off the top of my paycheck.
June was a rough month! My savings took a hit with my vacation and car repairs, but I put $479 in today, so I'm moving it back in the right direction. It's still going to hurt to see it dip on the graph since mid May! Current balance $2,165
$17,099.77 as of today...
Our original goal was $15k-- now we're aiming for $20k.
I am so totally stoked!
It feels good to be able to update in here again-- haven't been able to add to the savings for about a month, but I'm putting $2,500 in today. So, our new total is...
$12,584.71!!!
Just $2,415.29 until we reach our goal!
Congrats Juliette! :)
well done...
Thanks!
My band is going on tour this summer and I really need to contribute at least $100. Hopefully I can keep up the ambition!

I wanted to save to go on a vacation with my friends but I have trouble with spending money when I don't need to. My solution was to put a picture of my vacation place in my wallet so when i was getting ready to pay I would see that and decide if I really needed what I was buying and soon enough I did have enough! My vacation was awesome!
