I made the decision to complete a triathlon in 2010 about a month ago, and have been training hard since. I feel like my running and cycling have increased a lot but I'm still having problems with swimming. I can do about 4 laps, but then I always get tired and out of breath. I'm not used to having to think about my breathing so much and it's really tiring me out. Does anyone know of a way to increase my stamina?

Total Immersion: it is a book about improving your swim technique. It will help. Can be found on Amazon for under ten dollars. THe DVD is also a great help.

Thanks bcondon for the recommendation, I'll have to check it out.

I've had another week of training under my belt, and I'm definitely starting to see results. I was able to do 12 laps without stopping tonight, that's a first!

I def recomend getting a wet suit..it really helps plus it will keep you afloat...swimming takes time and after a few weeks you will be doing 20-30-40 laps in no time and wont be as tired..keep your feet(only your feet kicking not the whole leg) moving at all times and try to keep the same pace with your arms...try breathing on both the left and right side..this will build your stamina... few of the Sprint races I did do the breastsroke in the begining of the race just to make sure i wouldnt get kicked by anyone..good luck you will love it.

I have completed 2 Sprint Triathalons but was on my way to compete in the NYC Triathalon this past summer. 4 days before the event I was hit by a car while riding my bike. I was unable to particpate in the triathalon and after some rehab I hope to be back on a NEW BIKE when I get the insurance money to fix it. Still have pain in my shoulder but i think about competing and completing the race. My goal is to complete a FULL triathalon soon.

Way to stick with your goals in the face of tragedy. I'm sure you're an inspiration to a lot of people.

What kind of triathlon?

Anybody have some guidance for me for the off season? A few goals I have...one, improve my very sad run time from 13 min/mile to 11 min/mile (might be challenging...I live in the Frozen Tundra!!), also to work on core strength (some pilates/exercise ball workouts), overall strength training on machines....Any other thoughts? I don't know where to start, really!

I recommend to tried to leverage you time on the treadmill. Try interval training once a week. Start jogging at a 4.5 then jump to 6 to a couple of minutes...then switch back. Try for 30 minutes

Ihope to do a triathlon next year with my son. We want to do it around the center of the state. I live in San Jose and he in San Deigo. I'm ok with the swim and the bike I have not been running at all. So that is what I have to do is start running and keep up with my bike and swimming.

I have been running road races now for a year...I'm amazed at how much progress I have made doing this. I have friends that do Tri's and I agreed to do one if not two with them this coming year. I'm only nervous about the swim, but I would imagine a good wet / tri suite would eliminate allot of the fear. I look forward to the training and keeping in touch with you all.

Take care,
Rich from Maine

Been talking about running a triathalon for a year...enough talking, time to start thinking about it, getting into off-season program so that I can start 2010 with some real goals in mind! I'll need lots of direction in the next year, but am very excited!

Completed the SC 1/2 Ironman. I said anything faster than 6:00 and I'd go ahead with a full Ironman in Nov, which was the original target. Finished in 5:59:30. Now I'm one week out from my first Ironman. It'll be almost exactly a year to the day I started chemo.

The Tri Season is over :( Now to look forward to the 2010 season. like the saying goes, "triathlon is a winter sport played out in the summer"! or like the man himself said, "The tour is won in December, not July". It has been a great season, lots of goals to shoot for in 2010!
