Really struggling, lost 7 pounds and last 2 weeks gained 2, if I'm doing weight training will this now make the scales seem on the more heavier side as I am now gaining muscle or does it make no difference?

I have seen a few posts about headaches recently and I wondered what the team thinks. Are they telling us to eat or just to drink. I have been experiencing a few while at work. Mostly in the afternoon after lunch.

Have you been drinking your water? I find I get a headache when I am dehydrated! The other thing is if you are eating super healthy and that's a change for you then it might be your body in detox! Hope the weekend away was good?!

This weekend was a real test, having lost 17.5 lbs since the start of the year, staying at the wonderful St Pancras Rennaisance Hotel with two meals at the Oxo Towers And Gilbert Scott Restaurant as well as 2 lavish breakfasts in The Booking Hall would push my new dietry lifestyle to the limits. I honestly expected to gain weight over the 3 days which also included a meal as well in Pizza Express!! I reckon normally I would have gained 4 - 6lbs, but this time even though I did all these wonderfull things, I managed to lose 0.2lbs over the 3 days! Once more I have shocked myself and I still had the most extravagantly amazingly enjoyable 3 day long weekend of total decadence. I at the worst point of the weekend consumed cheddar cream ice cream for desert at one restaurant, followed by liquorice ice cream at the other! So how did I manage this slight weight loss against a massive weight gain? Simple really I used Livesrong on my iPhone all weekend and watched my calory intake, I did 2 significant gym sessions and instead of using taxis and tubes around London I walked everywhere which kept my net calorie intake below my target of 1500 and when in the restaurants I ate fish and lots of vegatables and fruit. Having now lost a further 2lbs in the last week, another hurdle in correcting my weight levels has been achieved, namely you can live life as usual and continue to enjoy yourself and it needn't be too painfull!!

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

Well done! I work just by that hotel! Wonderful isn't it! I now walk everywhere in London, not only have I lost weight,I have also discovered parts of London that I would have never have seen! ..... And I am a Londoner! Revelations on more than one level!

Start making slow changes so you don't get overwhelmed.
(Water is the most important factor in weight loss. Drink at least 8 glasses of 8 ounces though the day.)
First get used to the app and start practicing portion control.
Next start adding healthy foods like oatmeal or whole grain cereal and breads at breakfast.
then start adding fruit snacks between meals to for nutrition.
Start incorporating fresh or frozen vegetables into your diet with lean cuts of meat/fish/poultry beans and nuts for healthy protein.
Start including exercise daily in little increments to get and stay fit.
Little changes over time add up to big rewards later.
Good luck and welcome :)

A great website is bodybuilding.com. There is so much detailed info about diets and workout plans for beginners to professional athletes. Some starting tips:
1) take advice only from qualified people
2) portion control and moderation
3) start by cutting out junk food and sweets
4) lots of water
5) do at least 30 minutes of exercise at least 3-5 times a week. Weights and cardio
6) eat a balanced diet, plenty of veggies, complex carbs, increase lean proteins, healthy fats. If your not sure what these are, google it.
Good luck, start off slow and work your way into this type of lifestyle.

Check for some other signs of success like:
1. Start using a tape measure to measure your waist and thighs
2. Check if you fat is all squishy which means your fat cells are shrinking and your skin hasn't shrunk into place yet.
3. Also water retention could be an issue, especially if you're a female.

You could also try not getting on that dang scale so often too! Lol! I have found for myself- when I dont see the results thru numbers I get more discouraged- so I keep doing what I'm suppose to and just not weighing myself as often- skipping a week or even two at a time- it decreases my stress and I don't feel so much pressure to "make something happen"

What do u mean by huge difference? Depends on whether huge is realistic. I'm frustrated with a plateau right now, but know that no matter what, I needed these healthy changes, and the only way the weight will ever come off is if i keep at it, unfortunately :/

By Jlbirchett on February 12, 2012 at 06:22 PM

The best thing that I ever did was take away my scale. I weigh myself maybe once a week to once every two weeks. It's awesome to see the pounds come off at once but I really judge by how my clothes that every day. So judge by how you feel when you wake up in the morning and not always by the scale. Good luck and keep it up!

Be very careful when you measure and research the calorie intake. I was guessing a lot of the time only to find out I was actually eating bigger portions than I thought. I get online a lot to double check calories when there is a big discrepancy on this app. Look out for the green checked items, they are most accurate (even though I've found those are wrong at times as well)

Speaking of calories, I had a hard workout today and earned an extra bunch of calories. Sounds great but I don't know if I feel comfortable eating so much just to be limited again tomorrow. I know I'm suppose to replenish but do I use it as treat and eat crap or do I eat a truckload of healthy even if I'm not hungry? What do you guys do??

By ezmedellin on February 12, 2012 at 11:19 PM

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

The scale can be very misleading and should not be your main judge of success. If your gonna weigh yourself, do it in the morning on an empty stomach, once a week on the same day. Also make sure your diet is in check. Falling of your diet here and there can really set you back. Make sure your eating a balance diet with moderate complex carbs, higher lean protein ( at least 1g per body weight) and low fats. Make sure to weight lift at least 4-5 times a week and do 30 minutes of moderate cardio 4-5 times a week after you work out. If you stick to this you will see results. Judge your results on how you look and how your clothes fit. Hope this helps.

By ezmedellin on February 12, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

My observation suggests that more than likely a big portion of the weight loss is from water weight because of the low amount of carbs you are eating and possibly muscle loss. You may want to take a more balanced approach at a diet so that your weight loss comes mostly from fat. Moderate complex carbs, higher protein and low fat. 2 pounds a week is the best place to be. It's slow but you will be much happier with your results in the long run and it will be easier to maintain your new weight. Great job on all your efforts.

By matthewyoung on February 12, 2012 at 04:30 PM

To answer some questions asked about my thoughts on cheat days and what I eat. I do not believe in cheat days. I happen to enjoy eating at McDonald's, drinking dr. Pepper, have beer, eating steak, etc. Pretty much any food people deem bad I really enjoy eating, with the exception of coffee, sweets, and chocolate. I do not like those. This is the lifestyle I want to live and it works me. I work out so that I can eat more food. I do not care about my weight or BMI, because I do not believe they paint an accurate picture of health. Maybe to some my entire eating plan is a cheat. I can promise that it is easy for me to stick to because I am doing what I want and eating what I love to eat.

By LoseItLori on February 12, 2012 at 04:51 PM

Honestly I do not criticize your food choices. You do what works for you. It's a good thing! But it is questionable when advice is given to others which seems not to mirror this. I looked at your diary because I was like wow! He sounds like he is a super healthy eater! No cheat days, among other threads you have started which question the actions of peoplewho diet and exercise in general. I was really surprised to see what I saw. I felt misled. I am assuming it was unintentional, and maybe I misread your meaning in other posts. but I really wanted to understand why you tell people that cheat days are not OK after seeing hour your food choices Did I read something in error in the past?

By matthewyoung on February 12, 2012 at 04:57 PM

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

My food choices fit my lifestyle. Everyone always says "lifestyle" change. I do not understand the concept of cheat days in a lifestyle. If your lifestyle was to be drug free, would you get a cheat day to do drugs? if your lifestyle is to be sober, do you get a day to drink? If your lifestyle is married do you get a day were you can be single? If your lifestyle is vegan or vegetarian do you pig out on meat one day? The idea of a cheat day to me automatically says you are dieting.

By lauranada on February 12, 2012 at 05:00 PM

Good for you Mattew. It sounds like you've got figured out what works well for you. In the end it's about being healthy and happy with our bodies and ourselves, so if you've got it, then great :) Now, for most of us, eating that kind of processed food is not good. There's certainly enough medical claims out there an statistics to back up the fact that fast food and soda aren't health foods -quite the contrary. Certainly wouldn't advice others to eat it...

By matthewyoung on February 12, 2012 at 05:17 PM

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

I never advise people to eat like me. I am not claiming to eat healthy. I do not care though. Fat people die. Skinny people die. Healthy people die. Unhealthy people die. Young people die. Old people die. All at random. Does eating certain kind of food increase the likelihood you will live longer. Sure. Does it guaruntee it? No. When I die, whatever age that is, I simply want people to say he really lived.

Posted via LIVESTRONG.COM Calorie Tracker Mobile

I agree with matthew! Ive been overweight the majority of my life and once I decided to change my "lifestyle" there was no need for cheat days- all that says to me is that all the other days I'm not cheating, I'm dieting, I'm suffering, waiting for the next cheat day- I've found if I plan my calories correctly I can have "bad" choices without a specific day- using moderation- its what works for me though everyone is different

By matthewyoung on February 12, 2012 at 06:20 PM

I can only dedicate an hour and a half to the gym a day. Or roughly 700 to 1000 calories burned. So I still need to be under 3000 calories a day on work out days. And I use it to track my nutrition intake which I do worry about. I still want 60% of my diet from carbs, 10% protein and 30% fat. I don't care about sodium since I drink 150+ ounces a day and have a good amount of potassium. And it's habit. I have been tracking everything I eat and my weight for the last 10 years. It went from spreadsheet to this app when it first came out, what 4 or 5 years ago?

By tiffstark13 on February 12, 2012 at 06:21 PM

This app is actually toned down for me. When I started 10 years ago I cared more about my weight and weighted in before and after every meal, at the beginning and end of the day.

I do eat out a lot. I am pretty consistent monday thru friday breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is 1 pepperoni hot pocket, 360 calories. Lunch is chicken and vegetables and a dr pepper, roughly 500 calories. Dr pepper or two between dinner. That's 1000 to 1600 for dinner depending on if I work out. And I always have a banana and bagel post work out, which is another 450.

By LoseItLori on February 12, 2012 at 06:42 PM

Thank you for clarifying. I understand your thought processes. I may not totally agree, because I cannot see how eating unhealthy foods can be compared to other lifestyle/personal changes people make, ( marriage, smoking, vegetarian) because it seems you are not really struggling to give things up, but I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately, others cannot have the lifestyle you do. It won't work for them. That was my concern. It seemed you were condemning the choices of others.

What u r doing is maintaining a lifestyle and weight... However, many people on here must diet in order to get to the point of maintaining... Therefore a cheat day may be helpful in keeping them on that track and as you well know... If you are still working out and burning calories it is not going to be a major setback...

I like your thought process Matt I agree. I like the accountability of Livestrong it allows a transparency if you're honest. You can choose the lifestyle that suits you and adjust choices through exercise. It's a tool measure balance

I do not know how to respond other than I control the things I can and don't worry about the things I can't. I eat very little in in the morning and at lunch so I am prepared to so whatever I want after 5 pm. I have no illusions that any cares what I am trying to do in my personal fitness/weight life. All I think they care about is that I show up to dinner/drinks whatever it is and have fun. I do not believe they care or want to hear that I can't eat or drink what they are for any reason. They invited me to have fun and thats what I do. I will figure out what I need to do to keep myself in the shape I want and do not subject anyone to it.

Please ... Cheating is not tracking a food you know will interfere with your good choices. A treat is tracked and you deserve it even if it takes you above target. Tracking is about taking control, treating is motivating and a step toward a healthy attitude to food. I don't quarrel with people's choices and we are here to help ourselves and each other.

I'm so ready to give up. I work out probably 5 days a week. I eat, for the most part, really well and I can't seem to lose anything. I've been at this since the beginning of January. I see so many people on here saying they've lost 10, 20, 5lbs. I can't even maintain the loss of 1lb.

Don't give up there are so many factors that may come in to play. First go through your food diary see if there are any patterns that may need to be addressed like high sodium foods. Then look at the quality of your exercise. Stay committed the journey isn't always easy but it is always worth it.

I've tried elliptical and treadmill at various speeds and incline levels. Also tried weights. And I really push it when I work out. I actually sweat and keep my heart rate up.

The first question that comes to my mind is how closely are you monitoring what you eat? Eating well might mean you are eating healthy foods, but if you eat too much of even healthy foods you will not lose weight. I found I could not lose weight until I addressed both exercise and what I was eating. I count calories. The LS app will calculate for you what you need to eat a day. I found through trial and error that I can only eat the calories for sedentary lifestyle. I don't pay attention to the calories I exercise off. In other words I don't eat those calories back on. If I did I would not lose weight. I hope you stick with it, don't be discouraged, just adjust expectations after examining carefully how much you are allowing yourself to eat.

Absolutely keep trying. Many factors could be at play here.
Thyroid, carb intolerance etc.
Do lots of research, go onto the livestrong website and check your nutrient totals for sodium etc.
Also if you don't have much to lose it will come off really slowly.
And the body takes no time at all adjusting to our dietary and nutritional changes. You have to confuse the body and muscles by changing up your routines.
Drink a MINIMUM of 64 ounces of water daily.
I hope all the best for you :)

Eat less. Eat the right foods (complex carbs, no sweets, plenty of protein, etc.). U will lose weight. It's that simple.

Pay close attention to what you are eating. Make sure to track your calories everyday even on the weekends. Eat complex carbs and and high protein. Increase cardio. At least 30 mins of moderate cardio 5 times a week after your weight training. You will lose weight or at least body fat.

3 beer and 2 1/2 slices of loaded pizza for dinner. I earned the right after 13 months of being good! The funny thing is I was only 100 calories over after all of that. Now back to basics in the morning.

I know what you mean I had a few treats this weekend and I found I did not eat as much as i used to and it was easy to balance calories with exercise.

So I poured some Pepsi today to take with my medicine for my migraines and I haven't had Pepsi in almost a week and when I went to take a drink, it tastes so funny!!!!!! I couldn't even finish the 6 ounces I poured for me as a treat!!!!! I took my medicine with it and poured the rest out!!!!

I'm so proud of myself for that!!!! Pepsi is (I mean.......WAS my weakness)!!!!!!!!!

I haven't had soda in three years and I took a sip a couple days ago and nearly threw up!

I typically keep some amount of Pepsi in me daily to help prevent migraines and haven't had any since I started the diet, so I'm proud of me for that, and shocked how fast my taste buds have changed for that as well!!!
