All of the Participants agree that they have learned about portion control, using a hunger scale to determine their hunger level and most of all being accountable.  Both of the diets received very high grades.  They both teach healthy eating habits which can clearly be the foundation for a healthier lifestyle in the future.  Overall Diet Face Off 2 was a great success!

Stay tuned for our next Diet Face Off !

Best Life Diet Week 8 Recap

I would like to say that we have not heard from Pollie for the majority of the past 3 weeks.
She has not tracked food or been on the site since August 27th.  We assume she has quit the Diet Face Off 2.
While this may have lowered the overall weight loss number for our Best Life Team - her absence most certainly did not effect the amount of weight we did lose; collectively and individually.
That said - Keep it up Team Best Life!!

Kai
Lost 1lb

I Love what I read in your post!  Seriously you get it.  It is all about learning how to eat healthy foods.  Thinking about your hunger - drinking water - having realsitic goals.  Kai, well done.  Best of luck in your cyclocross season, please keep us posted on how you are doing.

I am glad that you are working out more - this will definitely benefit you going forward.  Cooking at home is the best way to monitor your food intake.  You can ask for the chef to make your fish a certain way - but who really knows.  Skinny Cow is so delicious - one of my indulgences as well.  If you are having a real hankering for sweet - try hot tea with honey or splenda.
Keep it up!

Well, I guess it had to happen at some point.  You are definitely on to something with the sodium intake.  It sneaks up you.  Continue to read labels and more importantly make your own food.  You already know all of this though.  You look amazing in your photo - be proud you have done what you came here to do!

Exercise makes all the difference - as you know.  If you or anyone for that matter really wants to drop weight their has to be a caloric defecit.  Great job staying away from the candy this week.  Once you get accustomed to being up early again, you will be more inclined to get moving and burn those extra calories.  Keep it up!

You are right and your message: "take care of yourselves; health issues are preventable" are the message that LIVESTRONG.COM is all about.
Keep your chin up - you have done amazingly well despite the bumps along this road.

Best Life Diet Week 6 Recap

Posted by whitneybarns | September 4, 2009 | 0 Comments

Carolyn:  Lost 1 lb this week

You may have gained a lb, like I saw in your comments, MUSCLE (or maybe water weight?)! It

really is impossible to have gained a lb of fat if you are eating at or below your estimated needs (but I’m glad you’re thinking!), so keep it up! AND I love camping and I’m a bit jealous that you got to go, how were the chicken hot dogs? I’ve never tried those! Congrats on the “re-new”ed comfy pants!

Seth:  Lost 2 lbs this week

Seth is still losing, but he brought up very valid points about weight and weigh-ins—they are variable and often misleading! Weight can be falsely low or high based on hydration level, salt intake, clothing and time of day. Anyone who doubts his or her weight changes (when they can see appropriate intakes and outputs) should really take a look at Seth’s blog. Looking’ great Seth!

Megan: holding steady this week

Megan, I’m so proud of you! Last week you talked a lot about things you knew you needed to change—but talk is only talk until the actions are taken—great week for you and like you said, definitely a great start! You needed to come to these conclusions on your own, like you said, you’re realizing now that you can’t rely on anyone else to do things for you. Good job rallying a friend to help you stay motivated to workout. Keep listening to your body and keep it up!

Kai:  Lost 1.1 lbs this week

Happy 4-0 KAI! Congrats on making it to a slimmer you by your birthday, that’s a pretty good present to yourself, right? You’re doing an excellent job keeping your routine, but doing a good job of allowing yourself treats for special occasions (hello Corona Lights!) Great advice for any soon-to-be-dieter—set attainable and realistic goals, thanks!

Renee: Lost 2 lbs this week

Renee is noticing her abilities to use her healthy eating mindset and emotional control as tools to control her intake and cravings. Using a pedometer to watch your steps is a good way to keep you thinking about intake vs. output in times of low physical activity—great that you’re mentally still in it to achieve your weight loss goals. Keep up the wise nutrition choices and you’ll continue on your way to a new wardrobe!

Pollie: Lost 0.2 lbs this week

Pollie lost this week, and that’s important, but we’re still not sure if it’s water weight or fat weight…Pollie I don’t see your diary since Sunday!! Stick to the BLD guidelines and stay active while camping—have fun! We’ll check back next week for your food diary and hopefully a tip of the scale continued in the right direction.

**Not that much time left to seal the healthy patterns! Keep tracking. Keep moving. Keep a positive state of mind. Keep losing! FYI: Where I am, it’s about 87 degrees and so humid it might as well be misting. Working out in some way is always possible, challenge yourself to some form of exercise despite the weather conditions—don’t make excuses! **

Starting Weight:      195
Last Week Weight:  184
Current Weight:       180
Lost This Week:        4
Total Loss: 15 pounds

What a crazy three weeks!  With all of the things going on to have the weight loss is amazing.  Without the ability to keep the activity level going there was some serious concern about how this would work.   So it has been staying with the basics of the Best Life Diet and keeping calories low.   I am looking forward to increasing the activity level since those extra calories would be nice.

The Best Life Diet Recap Week Three

Posted by whitneybarns | August 15, 2009 | 0 Comments

Seth:  Lost 4 lbs. this week
Seth moved on to Phase 2 and kicked up his workout routine another notch—GOOD JOB! He’s sticking to the BLD recommendations for food timing, amounts and fullness factors. Seth even gets the pleasure of dipping into some of his forbidden foods using his extra snack calories! Seth has a lot support at home in sticking to his diet, a strong motivator for sticking to your guns when it comes to cravings and decision making. Everyone should find friends, family, or something of the sort to help keep themselves on track!

Carolyn: Lost 1 lb. this week
Despite all the temptations a family get-away can hold, Carolyn STILL managed to lose a lb thanks to family support, making healthy food choices when out and maintaining physical activity! Like Seth, she’s learning how to choose appropriate foods while eating out, allowing her to feel comfortable with her new lifestyle in the “real world”, YAY! I’m glad you’re showing it’s definitely doable—men and women alike!

Megan: Gained 1.4 lbs. this week
Although Megan gained some weight this week, she’s still down from when she started. Like a few other participants, Megan’s ready to take on the challenge of Phase 2 this week, so we’ll see how her weight changes with that. I would recommend trying to stick to your estimated needs now, which will help to achieve weight loss while gaining muscle mass through your workouts. Also, try increasing your fruits and veggies—this will help to cut back on some of the saturated fats and sodium that may creep into the diet from snacks, convenience foods, etc! Keep it up!

Kai: Lost 2.6 lbs. this week
Kai beat his weekly goal of 2.5 lb loss per week! AND, what a great feeling to be dusting off the small clothes from the back shelf—talk about recession-style wardrobe updates (wink wink)! By now you’re well into the beginning of Phase 2, stepping up to the challenge of increasing your structure and workout while on a family vacay—someone’s seriously up for a challenge, but we all know you’ll do wonderfully with it!  You’ve finally gotten to the point in your workouts where you’re mentally committed and physically able to do anything with your workouts—that’s such an accomplishment, I hope you’re very proud of yourself. Hopefully the trails are nice and long and the poolside drinks don’t put you off track—but, as you already know, balance is everything, so the increased workouts will work wonders for you. Have fun and keep strong!

Renee:  Lost 3 lbs. this week
Renee had some health complications these past few weeks, but she’s doing better with the BLD recommendations. She lost a few lbs this week, although not so much from the exercise I think, so don’t any of you all out there get any ideas! She’s transitioning her workouts into longer walks, lowering the impact because of her recent medical hang-ups, but definitely not letting them become excuses!! SO proud of you for this! We all wish you a speedy recovery and know you’ll be out there kickin’ calorie butt out there in no time!

I can honestly say everyone I've heard from this week is doing a great job, you guys are really stepping up to the plate and facing personal challenges. I didn't see written or video blogs from some of our team this week---let's make sure to play catch-up and keep everyone up to date on how you're doing! I love seeing all the words of encouragement on eachother's blogs, keep your team support strong!
