Selenium is a mineral that is essential to your body in small amounts. Certain enzymes in the body, known as selenoproteins, depend on selenium. These selenoproteins have a number of functions, including thyroid hormone regulation, antioxidant functions and muscle metabolism. Selenium is found in supplements as well as in certain foods; Brazil nuts are the most concentrated source. The recommended dietary allowance in adults is 55 micrograms daily.
