The way to shape and contour your back muscles is through resistance training, advises personal trainer Gunnar Peterson. Train at least three times a week with weights heavy enough to challenge and fatigue your muscles in 12 to 15 repetitions. If you can't feel your muscles working and contracting while you're doing the exercises, increase the weight or do additional repetitions until you reach the point you can't complete another rep, says Peterson.
