Fishing tournaments in Minnesota are regluated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The DNR issues between 450 and 600 permits each year to tournament organizers. Regulation is intended to protect fish and their habitats and "reduce the potential for conflict with other water recreationists." All tournaments involving more than 25 boats, 150 participants or entry fees over $25 must have a permit; the DNR offers an updated tournament list and more information online.
