Has anybody decided to try this? I've gone to their website alli.com and was really impressed with all the info. It gives you specifics on how much fat (15 grams per meal) you're allowed, treatment effects if you intake too much fat (intestinal troubles) and how it works in general to help you lose more weight. Sounds interesting.

I don't think I'd try anything that warns on it's own website to take an extra pair of pants with you when you're using it! I read a study on it that says you can lose up to a pound a week from it, but just eat too much fat content in your food & you can have UNCONTROLLABLE  BM. YUCK.

Not for me, anyway. I'll stick to eating right and exercise & posting my food on My Daily Plate....I'm learning some good new habits.

me too. Even if it's for real, diet pills are just too unnatural. That and the fact that I'd be wayyy too young.....

Medically speaking Alli sucks! its the same medication known as XENICAL which had huge controversy of the years. Orlistat the Active ingredient in Alli/Xenical causes not only the explosive diarrhea but also HORRIBLE stomach cramps as well as umm not so pleasent shall i say Greasy oily gas. Its not a very comfortable product to use. It can cause digestion problems due to malabsorbtion of vitamins and minerals along with the fat that is expelled and frankly what goes in must come out so if you are taking Orlistat (Alli/xenical) well the fat you eat that is absorbed by the medications has to go somewhere and its always out. I have known many people who have tried the medication (which has been out for many many years) have had horrible accidents where they are just walking and greasy oily feces or a jelly like foul smelling substance excretes itself without notice and stains and leaves embarrassing odors on your clothes that all can notice. If you are going to watch your fat intake while on the pill then why bother taking it, JUST watch the fat intake. Its not healthy to mess with your digestive system in such a manner thats why the product is over the counter now because Millions of Doctors and Nurse Practitioners like myself Refuse to prescribe it.

The FDA approves a lot of things that are not good for us, Like Phentermine that caused heart attacks and death in women. In the 50'60's the Surgeon General said that smoking is harmless and can actually help you. THe FDA also approved birthcontrol in the 70s that ended up causing future children of women taking it birth defects. We have Vioxx that was FDA approved for arthritis but ended up causing heart problems, ulcers etc. A reason the FDA approves some OTC drugs are not because its safe all time its because the drug company making the drug cuts the dosage in half and now allows it to be nonprescription strength which FDA deems more appealing thinking that everyone will be compliant with the dosage and instructions and we all know most of us are not compliant patients. Just because it was approved by the FDA does NOT mean its safe.

if you follow a low cal, low fat diet as well as exercise then there is no need to use alli, you will have success just from the origional approach. I see no need in taking a potentially dangerous and harmful medication when you will be doing all the work to lose weight naturally in the first place. Also remember once you are off the pills you will gain weight back!

I have to agree. . . For some reason, my son (a string bean of a character) pointed me to a web page the day Alli hit the shelves, rather irate on behalf of the feminist viewpoint (i.e. angry that women are being told in yet another way we're not good enough as we are--yes, I'm proud of him :) ).

The article quoted a study conducted for a year, wherein two comparable groups dieted and exercised, but only one of them also took Alli. As a reward for the humiliating side effects, the Alli group lost an average of *blaring trumpets here* THREE pounds more than the control group--and still regained the weight once they stopped the drug.

Wow. Not.

Factor in the $50-60 a month for this miracle pill and it makes more sense to spend a couple dollars a week at your friendly whole foods store to overdose on a bag of prunes or senna, doesn't it? :P

Homefixuns... if you're interested in *support and information* and not criticism for your interest in Alli, feel free to join the Alli group (click "Groups" at the top of the page, then scroll down to find Alli Users). It's comprised solely of people who are using it (with great success, I might add) or people who are interested in using it.

Look forward to seeing you there!

I think the information skinnursemandee gave was excellent - and not criticism at all. The best thing anyone can do for themselves is to exercise and eat healthy, healthy portions as well - the long-term effects of that will outweigh those of most all prescriptions or OTC pills.

I agree, I really don't trust the FDA since they seem to have too many other things on their minds. I was thinking the other day that wouldn't you get close to the same result without the poo in the pants if you ate what you should while taking the drug? Plus you get to keep the $50. :)

Anything with the "FDA" seal of approval- what a joke- has a LOT of fine print (i.e. "Side effects may include...").
Not for me, thank you.
