I'm nominating my husband, Todd Hitz, because of the inspiration and light he shares with others daily. For all that he has been through, Todd has never complained, and it's because of WHO he is and his spirit that I believe he is still here.
He was only 22 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma. Three years of chemotherapy and radiation weakened his body, and he needed a bone marrow transplant to save his life.
On the day of his transplant, I remember him sitting up in bed, eyes shining, singing along to a Garth Brooks song that was blaring on the stereo. His sister Tammy was there, and it struck me how alive he looked, how at peace he seemed as they laughed, talked and sang.
The energy and light coming from Todd that day was amazing considering he had just undergone 12 days of aggressive chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Yet there he sat, weak and in pain but whole-heartedly celebrating life while an I.V. of Tammy's bone marrow flowed into his body. That's indicative of how he lives his life—giving 100% each day and never letting the magnitude of this disease consume him.
Todd was the first bone marrow recipient at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and just one week later, this caring, generous man started a bone marrow transplant support group at the hospital. In 12 years, it has grown into a thriving community of patients and families who depend on the support.
He also interacts with Cancer patients and families through CaringBridge.com and at doctors' requests. He is truly gifted at relating to them, offering comfort without ever giving false hope.
Since the transplant, Todd has been in remission, but the years of chemotherapy and radiation caused layers of scar tissue to build up around his heart. He lost weight and suffered countless bouts of pneumonia; there were many times we didn't think he'd make it.
In 2004, he had open heart surgery to have the scar tissue removed. His physical condition weakened, but I'm in awe of his courage and amazing inner strength that push him forward to make the most of each day.
He used to face his challenges with faith that he would "see the light at the end of the tunnel." But he has come to believe the "light" isn't at the end of the tunnel, it's already with us throughout our journey in life.
He recently wrote, "We really can't comprehend just how blessed we really are. But we can give thanks, and we can use our blessings to be a blessing to others, if nothing else than just by being happy and thankful each day so others may draw from the ‘light' you give."
That is the creed Todd lives by as he takes it one day at a time, giving 100% of what he can to make the most of every single day he has with loved ones and those who need him.

It is not easy, everyday is a struggle mentally and physically. There are many individuals that can sympathize with Todd and his family. My family and I are one of those stories like Todd and his family. More importantly, the inspiration Todd gives to everyone he meets (as well as ones he may never meet) encourages them to look not at what they are no longer capable of, but what they are capable of if they try. Some hero's give their lives for others in that moment of truth, then there are those whose whose moment of truth last a lifetime. Thank you for being one of my hero's, may your light continue to shine in every life you touch. God Bless you Todd and your family as well.

Todd and Krissy,
You are both truly an inspiration. At a young age Todd, you had the world at your fingertips... great scholar, great athlete, good looks. You had it all! I remember when you were first diagnosed and how tragic it was. One could easily understand if you would have become negative, because you had so many positive things going for you and then this unfortunate turn of events occurred. Your gentle spirit never let that happen...you remained positive and never outwardly asked why me?
You both are remarkable people! God bless.

Todd,
That is an awsome story of faith you have in our God as the great physician. He is in control and has put you in this position to be the beacon of light to others who may not know our God and it does flow through you. You were my roomate and teamate in college and you were the nicest, kindest person I knew and I didn't realize it then, but a blessing to have as a friend.

Hi Todd, don't know if you remember me. I was the exchange student from Austria in 1988/89. Last time we saw each other was about 13-15 years ago, when I was visiting the Madaras and you and John Skrodinsky stoped by to see me. I was always amazed how you managed through your illness and treatments. During the last couple years I often wondered how you are doing. Sounds like you really went through a tough time. Good to hear you always had great people (family and friends) around you, who helped you through the hard moments. I wish you ALL the best for you coming up life. Hope to see you again. I'm planning to visit the Madaras in the coming up 1 or 2 years again. Maybe I'll see you and Krissy then. I'll vote for you and keep my fingers cross that you will win !!! Good luck !!!!
