The glycemic index measures how quickly ingested foods raise blood glucose or sugar levels. Foods that have a high glycemic index value are more quickly digested and raise blood glucose levels faster. A high glycemic index diet contains foods such as sweets, white bread, pasta, potatoes, chips and other simple carbohydrates. These foods can lead to an increased risk of excess insulin production, diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as low energy levels, fatigue, weight gain and obesity.
