This is a group for people with 100 pounds or more to lose, though we are inclusive and anyone can join. Most of us have tried enough diets to realize they don't work for the long-term and are embracing a lifestyle change. This is a place to come to discuss our special challenges and share stories, kindness, support, inspiration, and the wisdom we've gained in our journeys with each other. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
Today the first time I've been to The Daily Plate, saw this blog and had to join so I
could post.
I just wanted to say to everyone here with over 100 lbs to lose that you CAN do it!!
Believe in yourself, stay motivated. If you have a bad meal it doesn't mean your day is
ruined. Pick up from the bad meal and make the rest of the day a good one, dont think its
ok to eat bad the rest of the day because "you already messed it up by having _____, so
the day is gone". How many times have you said that? I can't count on my fingers and
toes (x 10) how many I have..
if you eat "ok" foods, find better ones (ie. whole wheat bread instead of wheat bread,
etc)
stay positive, pass on the second helping and always pass on the desserts (enjoy a piece
of fruit instead its more beneficial)! :)
Thanks for the encouragement! I looked at your bio entry, and I see it took you 3 years to lose 110 - I'm kind of bummed my loss is going so slowly. It took me over a year to do 50, and I've been stalled around that loss since September :p Seeing that it took you 3 years gives me some encourangement to hang in there, though :) How long have you been maintaining your weight loss?
Welcome to the gang! I read your profile, and just wanted to say I'm sorry you were so miserable losing weight before! You'll get plenty of good ideas here on how to lose/maintain without feeling like food is something you have to deprive yourself of or suffer through eating in order to lose weight. I think of TDP as "many paths to the same God", as our bodies are resilient and there are many ways to nourish it, lose weight, and be healthy.
I have to agree the science is a little dicey on Splenda - there was a lot of money to be made by getting the FDA to approve it (all politics, which is why Stevia is a "supplement" and cannot be marketed as a sweetener). But for even the most toxic substances, dose makes the poison. Just like many presciption drugs, the proper dose can do good and and overdose can cause death. On totally intellectual terms, I'd reject Splenda, but for me it's a crutch I can't give up. Is it healthier to be 100 pounds overweight, or healthier to ingest a few grams of chlorine-based "sugar" into my body? I know for me it's one or the other. I wish I loved Stevia, and have tried several brands (including the much-touted "Sunnydew") but haven't been happy with the taste. But if you can recommend a fabulous brand of Stevia, I'd sure to be open to try it!
Welcome, and congratulations on the weight loss. It's always encouraging to hear from people who have been successful.
I don't generally use sweeteners (I like my coffee, tea and even cocoa unsweetened), but occasionally I drink green chai, which I like slightly sweet, and I use Stevia for that. I also like SweetLeaf liquid Stevia flavours added to sparkling water, very refreshing and a nice change from plain.
I do use Splenda for baking in preference to sugar, but I rarely bake so it's not that often. I keep a container of little packets next to my tea and coffee for family and guests, and I always suggest Stevia to those who use Splenda or whichever sweetener comes in the blue packets, but unfortunately most people don't really like it much.
Norska, hang in there, sometimes plateaus happen and that when you should think about stepping up the exercise. Even an extra 15 minute walk could help burst that pesky plateau! Journal everything, somtimes we forget about those little single bites we put in our mouth, the ones we eat just to satisfy a craving.. those add up too and could be whats adding to your plateau. you can do it, stay positive :)
thanks for the welcome AZ Kate, Its ok that I was miserable during dieting after all... if we liked to diet, we would be able to stay on it forever and not worry about cheating right? lol it helped me stay focused long enough to lose the weight, now I'm here to maintain (or taper off when I gain a lb or 2). Great site and great meeting you :)
hi Gille, thanks for the welcome!
I'm trying use stevia powder more but its a process! I'm sure it will take a while to get use to (just like it took a while to get use to artificial sugars after eating sugar all my life), but I'll do it. I like the liquid stevia instead of the powder and love the flavored liquid stevia. I guess new lifestyles are about change right? lol
have a good day!
