This is a group for people with 100 pounds or more to lose, though we are inclusive and anyone can join. Most of us have tried enough diets to realize they don't work for the long-term and are embracing a lifestyle change. This is a place to come to discuss our special challenges and share stories, kindness, support, inspiration, and the wisdom we've gained in our journeys with each other. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

I'm sure it depends on your weight. But if you are subsisting on less than 1200 calories a day, that's too low.
Thanks for this, Nikki.
Jillian Michaels would say that 1200 is the absolute minimum for women. Men would be higher. But I think it can be different for everyone based on age, height, weight, etc.
I've also heard it said that if you eat below your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) for long periods of time, you will go into conservation or starvation mode. Your BMR is supposed to be the number of calories that your body needs just to lay in bed all day. It's the amount of calories your body needs just for brain & liver function, etc.
If you're 100 lbs overweight, do I think you will stop losing weight if you eating a couple hundred calories under your BMR?? No, but if I were you I would mix it up and have a couple calorie days that are at or above your BMR here and there.
I'm not any kind of expert, but that's what I do and so far it's working. I recently tried to lower my calories about 200-300 below my BMR at the suggestion of Jillian Micheal's site and after 19 days I realized that for me it just wasn't sustainable. I was waking up in the middle of the night very hungry and I was also irritable and stressed. Don't get me wrong, sometimes I find it easy to eat less, but to MAKE myself eat less even on a day when I'm extra hungry is what I'm going to try to avoid.
What to know what your BMR is? This is my favorite resource by far:
