This is a group for people with 100 pounds or more to lose, though we are inclusive and anyone can join. Most of us have tried enough diets to realize they don't work for the long-term and are embracing a lifestyle change. This is a place to come to discuss our special challenges and share stories, kindness, support, inspiration, and the wisdom we've gained in our journeys with each other. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."
DIET & EXERCISE: We all know its a question of
Diet and Exercise. I wanted to write about exercise though, as it does not always
sink in in concrete "WEIGHT LOSS" terms.
Some think: "yeah, yeah, i know its good for me" . Others dont make
the connection between exercise and weight loss. Some think, " its healthy but then
I just get hungry and have to eat more."
CONCRETE TERMS: HOW DOES EXERCISE AFFECT WEIGHT&n
bsp;LOSS? A while back I started doing data analyses of my
own progress to see how this works. If anyone cares to read, I am sharing the steps
with you.The info I got was based on me honestly tracking everything i eat, and
everything I do every single day.
1. First look at your TOTAL number of calories consumed for a given the time period. Then
get the AVERAGE CALORIES EATEN PER DAY. So for example, lets say you
ate 36000 calories over 20 days, the average daily calorie amount comes to 1800 eaten per
day.
2. Then look at your weight loss. Just as an example, say you lost 4 pounds in 20 days.
You divide the number of pounds by # of days, to get your average DAILY pounds lost,
and multiply by 7 to get your WEEKLY pounds lost. So this would end up as
.2 pounds DAILY or 1.4 pounds WEEKLY.
3. Then look at your "calories burned" through exercise or activity. Lets call
these Xcals (exercise calories) In my case, I burned 8209 XCals in 15 days. This is
a Daily Average XCal burn of 547 (Daily Calories from Exercise or Activity) -
- DAILY EAT: During 15 days I ate a DAILY AVERAGE of 915 calories.
- DAILY BURN: During 15 days I burned a DAILY AVERAGE of 547 calories (from
activity).
4. During those 15 days, I LOST 4.1 pounds. Using a calculator, this AVERAGES 1.9133
pounds per week. So here is our information: Now: we all know that to lose 1 pound
means 3500 calories "off" (thru diet or exercise) per WEEK, or 500 calories
PER DAY "calorie deficit". So we say to ourselves, "How many
calories per day does 1.91 POUNDS equal?" To do this you multiply by 500.
LOST DAILY (expressed as calories) = 955 calories LOST per day
5. So lets look at the weight loss and say, "Where did this weight loss come
from?"
DAILY WEIGHT LOSS expressed as calories = 955. per day.
DAILY EXERCISE BURN = 547
HOW MUCH OF WEIGHT LOSS CAME FROM DIETING? Lets figure it out.
Subtract the Daily Exercise Calories from the Daily Weight Loss Calories.
Dieting Calories 955 - 547 = 408. 955 - Weight Loss Calories. 547
= Weight lost due to exercise. 408 = Weight Lost due to dieting.
LETS LOOK AT THE PERCENTAGES: (divide 547/955, and then divide
408/955)
WHERE DID THE WEIGHT LOSS COME FROM?
57% came from EXERCISE
43% came from DIETING (reducing calories)
CONCLUSION: When I add up ALL my numbers, this indicates
if over the 15 days it had been:
NO DIET JUST EXERCISE: If I did not diet, ate
1870 and ONLY exercised: I would have lost 2.3 pounds in 15 days, NOT 4.1
pounds.
NO EXERCISE JUST DIET: If I
did not exercise but just dieted at 915 calories, I would have lost 1.7 pounds in 15
days, NOT 4.1 pounds.
FINALLY: What I am exploring now is what will happen
since I have added calories. I raised my calories to about 1200 so we will see.
Thanks if you read this far!
Hi Deb, I'm failrly new to the site, but i've been following your posts for a two days, first of all Congrats on making your happy medium! :) Abt where does weigtloss come from: I believe it is defenitely a combination of both. I know very active people who eat junk food all day and are not overweight (their health ofcourse is another matter lol)I also know a few people that are not trylu active (no exercise) and are thin because they simple dont consume enough (again i'll bet their health is questionable) Weightloss should be a healthy combination of both. Like i said earlier I'm new and for now I'm just stating with lowering my calories, and I'll slowly incorporate exercise as i go along so i don't over do it. Anyway, i would love to continue to see your progress (it's inspirational as a beginner), and thanks for the great read : )
