About This Group

This is a group for people with 100 pounds or more to lose, though we are inclusive and anyone can join. Most of us have tried enough diets to realize they don't work for the long-term and are embracing a lifestyle change. This is a place to come to discuss our special challenges and share stories, kindness, support, inspiration, and the wisdom we've gained in our journeys with each other. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

uncharted territory

posted by deb1207 on 2:55 am

Tonight, the possibility of gaining the weight back reared its head. I did not do anything to cause this, but I noticed that as I have added calories in the past few days. my body feels differently. I feel a certain fullness, and warmth, that was not there before, yet I at times actually feel hungrier. For months I had eaten far fewer calories than what I ate today (1277), but it felt "normal" to me. A few other Livestrong members I know can relate to this, who had similar issues. Right now I am working on figuring out how to eat enough so that one loses maybe .5 to 1.5 pounds a week, but no more. I also dont want to gain.

There is such a fine line though, it seems between losing say a half pound a week, and gaining a half pound a week. The difference being 500 calories per day. It feels like completely uncharted territory. In terms of support, I feel like there are plenty of "life preserve" people out there, and rescuers, and helpers, (like all of you), but its such a whole different thing to either work to slow weight loss down or work to keep it the same.   I am beginning to think, and this is not just about me, but about some of you  ---- that as we are all sort of used to "watching the numbers" , excited if we lose more than we expect for a week, jazzed by our progress....that we need (or I need) another number system to look at to measure progress.   Maybe I can work on changing other numbers to reach goals: like improved strength, lower heart rate, how many situps one can do...Measuring body fat levels and seeing how they improve. Something like that. Just thinking out loud this Sunday morn at 3 am   .

Good morning deb!

Is it possible to gain weight when your eating just above 1200?

Thinking of your previous post on weight loss, even if you ate 500 more calories, but still exercised, you would still have a weight loss, just not as large as previous weeks.

On other lists Ive seen people mention throwing out the scale, just measuring themselves and setting other goals to mark their progress.

I think it is normal to get nervous about adding calories.  It is.  And honestly, it might take your body a week to adjust.  It has lived on very little for a long time.

I absolutely agree that your weight should not be the only determiner of your success.  There are many ways to measure success.  Don't let the scale be the only way you see progress.  Measurements, resting heart rates, blood pressure; all of those things are just as, if not more, important as your weight.

Deb, you are doing a terrific job!  Keep up the good work (and keep eating ;) )

To answer Twilyght's question above, I think it IS possible to gain a bit of weight when eating 1200 calories IF your body has only been used to 700 on a regular basis. Because if the body was in conservation mode, it will take a little bit to get out of that state. And while it's still in that state (if it is), the body would hold onto the extra calories, not knowing when it would get more. But if Deb keeps at it and doesn't panick with a little weight gain (if it happens), then pretty soon her body will start to realize that it's going to get a bit more nutrition every day and go back to normal. I hope all that made sense.

Deb, you are dong such a good thing for YOU and you are doing a HARD thing for you. So vent and share as much as you want. We'll all be there to support you. And just remember, you have plenty of time to get down another 15 lbs. You yourself said you're happy with 1/2 to 1 lb a week. That would be 3-4 lbs a month. So you might want to do what I do with my monthly goals...

As you are weighing yourself every day, if the scale goes up a bit, just remind yourself of your month-to-date loss. Is it on track to lose 3-4 lbs for the calendar month? I'm sure it is, right? And if I know you, it's probably ahead of schedule.

Not sure if that will help, but it helps me. As you know my scale has been all over the place this month, probably because of hormones or something. But each time the scale tips up, even though my efforts are great, I just look at my month-to-date loss and usually it's right on track.

Deb, you're barrelling toward "maintenance mode". You've done SUCH a great job getting down close to your goal weight in 8-9 months! Amazing!! Stupendous!! Spectacular!!! So I think you would do well to stop giving day to day weigh-ins ANY power over you. Non whatsoever!

Just think... BIG PICTURE. B-I-I-I-I-I-G Picture!! And if you're like me, and you start to feel yourself panicking from time to time. Just repeat those words out loud. Bi-i-i-i-ig picture. :o)
