About This Group

This is a group for people with 100 pounds or more to lose, though we are inclusive and anyone can join. Most of us have tried enough diets to realize they don't work for the long-term and are embracing a lifestyle change. This is a place to come to discuss our special challenges and share stories, kindness, support, inspiration, and the wisdom we've gained in our journeys with each other. "Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in rising every time we fall."

painful foot cramps

posted by rubysmom on 3:39 pm

I've been experiencing muscle cramping in my feet lately. I can't figure out why. At first I thought maybe I was dehydrated but I'm getting more than enough water. Does anyone have any suggestions as to causes and/or cures?

Hmm...i'm not sure...have you been exercizing lately? I drink a lot of water as well, but i've found that lately i've been experiencing a lot of cramping in my calves...maybe we need more potassium...isn't that what they say cures those kinds of cramps? I think so...try eating some bananas and see what happens! That's the only thing i can think of.

Potassium is the only other thing I can think of... It's worth a shot and good luck :)

It might just be overworked muscles. DO they cramp more once you take the weight off your feet? If so, it might mean overwork and/or poor foot support - check those shoesies! I know a lot of us wear cute sandals with NO arch support in the summer ;)
Other than that, if it persists or you start feeling cramping in other areas, I would ask your doctor when the last time your thyroid was tested. When my thyroid went seriously out of whack last year, I would get painful cramps, spasms and rigidity in my feet, legs, and abdominal muscles.

Potassium is usually the culprit for me. My cramps come in the backs of my legs in the middle of the night, and an increase in potassium usually helps. It might help, too, to relax them in some warm water at night (whether it be just your feet or taking a bath).
