loosing lbs, adding miles

posted by kleighmac on 10:23 am

I am a 21 year old college senior who has been working my butt off, literally, for about a year. I was pretty fit in high school playing sports year round and always making sure I would be ready for the next season. I graduated in 2005 and didn't have too many problems freshman year with the freshman 15. I gained 10lbs but lost it by the spring semester (take note, I didn't drink then either!)

Summer '06 I started drinking and gaining and loosing a few pounds here and there, no big deal, right? Well, by Dec 2007 I had gained about 35 lbs and decided this has to stop! I'm from Atlanta and thankfully, I joined a new personal training health club that helped keep me on track to loose all of that weight in 6 months. Currently, I am still trying to loose the last 10-15 lbs in order to be at my goal weight and I am training for a half marathon.

I read a lot of your stories about what to eat and what vitamins or supplements to take; right now I am taking the women's active multivitamin and nature made's omega capsule daily. When I finish workouts, I drink whey protein and eat some sort of carb. So far, this is all going well.

I just have had a plateau of weight loss months. (One good week, one bad over and over)

Well, I am new to the livestrong.com site and look forward to continuing to hear all about your stories and see what your suggestions are.

Also, as far as food goes, right now I am trying to cook from the Clean Eating Diet Book by Tosca Reno. ***As I am in college, recipes get really expensive and I am just looking for some healthy ideas. If you have any helpful recipes please post them or tell me where to get them.

Thanks and good luck to you!

My experience is similar. I didn't gain the freshman 15 but always have had problems with my weight (I stopped irish dancing after 9 years and my metabolism crashed through the floor). I worked hard my junior year of college and lost 50 lbs but between the stressors of senior year and turning 21 (I didn't drink until then either) I gained it all back. Now I am 22 and a first year grad student and am determined to get the pounds off and keep them off.

When I was loosing all of the weight and on a tight college budget, I ate a lot of lean cuisines, salad and fish (which is not super cheap but usually came in individual portions). I also drank a lot of water, worked out in the college gym twice a week, went running (just a mile) twice a week and played ice hockey twice a week.

I know how difficult it is to make time to work out and to eat well, especially senior year of college! I had the time of my life with my friends senior year, but let's just say beer pong was probably not the healthiest regular activity. Regardless, enjoy your senior year because nothing is ever like it again.

Best of Luck !!

Hey, congratulations on joining the personal training health club and losing the weight! That's a really awesome accomplishment!
As far as the weight loss plateau, try to shock your body. (Ex: If you're doing long, consistent cardio sessions, then try some shorter, more explosive sessions. Get the heart rate up. Add sprints, add hills) Keep your body guessing so it has to adjust itself to meet the changes in your routine.

In terms of lean cooking, I recommend buying some Traditional Oats for breakfast (Quaker, not any of the instant oats, you want whole grains  for complex carbs) and buying a bag of frozen chicken for lunches or dinners. Do you have a foreman grill? I would grill a couple pieces on a Sunday and just add chicken to my meals throughout the week- on salad, or have chicken over a bed of whole grain brown rice at the end of the day. Add some veggies and Voila!

Best of luck with everything. :)
