90 Day Challenge Group Group

About This Group

UPDATED: I'm extremely happy that we have so many people in this group, and I want EACH AND EVERY ONE OF US to accomplish our goals. To do this, we must have determination, focus, and support. The support, to me, is the key. I ask everyone to try and define their goals, and share them. Whether it be to quit smoking, lose a few pounds, or tone up, it is VITAL that we support and encourage one another. I wish everyone the best of luck on this journey. - John

New to Group

posted by Jessapeach on 9:55 am

Hey John, Manda sent the link to join the group.  I saw how it worked for Andrew and would love it if it worked like that for me as well!!  Going to the gym 3-4 days a week, doing cardio for 25 minutes (on lunch break).  Just added on weight machines to my membership so hopefully that will help out as well.  My goal, in three months, is to lose 20 pounds for starters....then another 20 after that!  Wish me luck!!

by Amandamaye on Mar 18, 2009 at 10:14 am

Jess I am so excited you joined!! I was hoping one my friends would join in with me! Let me know if you need any support in anyway. Maybe on the weekends we can meet up and go walking in the nice weather! :)

Jessica, it's great you joined. Your goals are attainable, without a doubt. Take it from Andrew- with dedication, and some perspiration, you can accomplish anything you set out to do. Andrew will probably give some tips on how he ate during the 90 days (lots of good stuff) last time around. A good combo of nutrition and exercise will definitely get you to your goal.
I will ask that you share some of your weaknesses with us, and how you plan on adjusting during these 90 days. We're here to help in any and every way Jess. CYA

Jesse,
Welcome to the challenge. Great determination and motivation will bring you all the luck you need.

by Jessapeach on Mar 18, 2009 at 1:58 pm

Weaknesses huh?  If I am to be honest with myself...and you....I would have to say that my willpower is my weakness. It's not very strong. If I am craving gummy bears...I am going to eat gummy bears....and not just one....I will eat a handful or two. Even if I have someone telling me to "get out of the cuboard or stop munching" I still try to justify it by saying "I go to the gym 3-5 days a week, I am entitled to eat some gummy bears" Which may be true.....but two handfuls? and Everyday?  No.
As far as my plan goes.....ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!!!   I am not a big drinker so it's easy to say No Drinking.  It probably won't even phase me if I didn't have an alcoholic beverage for 90 days. Please, I would love suggestions.
Manda, Totally willing to do the walking thing....your place or mine!  They extended the bike trail all the way by our house!  Very nice walk.

Well maybe you can do what Amanda is doing right now in having an "allowance". Amanda, you can share your plan with Jessica if you would like.
There's nothing wrong with "cheats", but within reason. As I had mentioned in another blog, nutrition is the major factor in our health in wellness. Working out/exercising gives us a more toned look and keeps our vital organs working strong. I recommend giving yourself One handful of gummy bears a week. You choose- eat them all at once, or have one or two a day until that "handful" is gone. I myself avoid all cheats during my 90 days (drinks and Sour Patch Kids!), simply for the challenge, and the feeling of achievement at the end is incredible! Either way, you have every right to have some form of cheat meal/snack. How about finding an alternative food that you can snack on besides the gummy bears? Baby carrots and Hummus are a favorite snack of mine while watching TV.

I think this group will really be a big help, personally I am trying to lose some weight at least 10 pounds and to exercise every day.
Good Luck,

Welcome Rich. I'm sure you are going to do great. Plenty of walking in the group and watching your food intake will be the keys to your success.

Day 1

posted by frayedspool117 on 6:14 am

So last night I went out with a bang, and I start my 90 days today.. Cardio this AM and a bowl of organic cereal with a banana.. meal number 2 here we come...

What's everybodies goals?

by johnny3533 on Mar 18, 2009 at 6:19 am

Ha, yeah you did. How many did you have AFTER I left? :)
My goal is to get back to around 5% body fat. I'm not looking for the strength goal as much as last year, but I WILL try your phase workout. I'm avoiding alcohol and any cheat food altogether (yes Andrew, your "weak" comment about alcohol pushed me to phase it out completely!). My foods will be simple and whole, not processed. Back to the whole grain breads and brown rice!
Today I have had a meal replacement shake, and I got in a pretty solid "push" workout (chest, triceps, and shoulders) this AM. I'm trying to keep workouts to around 40 minutes if possible. Time to eat again though!

I figured that since you were popping over around six to do the chicken that there wouldn't be time for an evening workout. Let me know what your plans are then.

by frayedspool117 on Mar 18, 2009 at 7:13 am

Eat Well, Be Well

posted by johnny3533 on 6:03 am

Everyone keeps talking about how they need to get to the gym and exercise more. Although this is true, it is not NEARLY as important as how you eat. Couple quick tips:
1. Breakfast IS the most important meal of the day. You have gone up to 10 hours without food. No wonder we are groggy when we get up. Have a good, nutritious meal with fruits, grains, and some form of protein if possible.
2. Smaller meals are better than one or two meals throughout the day. I eat ALL THE TIME (you see me). Two large meals will not get completely burned and utilized. Some of that "energy" will be stored as non-lean body mass. And because your metabolism will slow down with less meals, you will start to burn some fat, but you will likely burn more muscle.
3. WATER IS KEY. Helps metabolism. Sounds odd, but the more water you drink, the less you retain. Your body realizes that there seems to be an endless supply, so there is no need to retain as much water in the body!
As for me, I'm on day three of clean eating. I went to the bar last night with Andrew (who starts today), and I had a grilled chicken salad and SIX seltzer waters with lime. It did the trick!

Welcome

Glad you made it. I started my 90 days on Monday, March 16th, and so far so good. Not one cheat, and I've worked out both days.
I hope that you can add a few messages along the way and keep everyone abreast of how you are doing.

Thanks.
John
