Should I or shouldn't I ???

posted by tacarino on 3:00 pm

There are days, quite a few actually, when I am not hungry and only eat maybe 1200cal. Then u consider my 500cal subtracted for exercising, I maybe net 700 cal. My question is, Should I(or shouldn't I) eat even if not hungry to up my calories to more of a reasonable amount. I have had low fat, low cal ice cream or skim milk,  with granola and blueberries many nights just to up my calories. I'm down to my last 10lbs so I now it's gonna b hard.
Any suggestions/comments welcomed. Thanx BLG.

by billcole on November 19th 2009 at 3:26 pm

Yes you should.  Hunger is certainly the main tip off that your body neds food.  Eat the cals--that way you don't risk screwing up your metabolism.

by Whitebikini on November 20th 2009 at 5:34 am

Yes.  You should.  At least some fruit or something.  Otherwise your body will start to "panic" and you'll never lose those last 10 pounds.

by HealthyNewfie on November 20th 2009 at 10:21 am

Having a day or two a week with low calories will not hurt you but eating below your BMR every day will cause your body to go into conservation and will not allow you to rid those last 10 lbs.

by chippererica10 on November 20th 2009 at 2:21 pm

If it's one day don't sweat it, but on your gym days make a concious effor to eat more calories throughout the day. Add in protein and fats. Have some peanut butter on your toast, or scramble your eggs with some olive oil. Have a protein shake with your lunch, or eat some almonds mid-afternoon.

When adding in calories go for protein! Your body uses 35% more calories to break proteins down than any other macronutrient.

I love following them too and I have followed a bunch of contestants from BL which is very inspiring. You should look at Shay's, she has recent pictures up and she is beautiful. And she always posts some of her work outs, grocery lists, where she gets work out clothes, etc. Its pretty cool. Another one I like to follow is Tara from last season.

Back on that train

posted by Viylette on 8:01 am

Well guys, I have been away for a while. But, now I am back and ready to start the journey...... again.
Around June, I was almost to my goal and weighed 124, then the depression hit, and I shot right back up to 134.40 in a matter of 4 months. 10 pounds in 4 months, ughh. So, I am commited to get this weight off again, and this time keep it off. I want to hit my goal wieght of 120.00 by the end of February.  alot of that had to do with the support I received here, and I want to thank you all.
Looking forward to losing this weght...again. :) I am so glad everyone on here has been doing well in my absence.

Holy crap!  Thanks for sharing.  They work out for 6 hours a DAY!  My goodness, I feel like I've kicked but if I do 45 minutes LOL

by Cungem on November 19th 2009 at 10:18 am

I think they exercise 6-8 hours a day at the ranch, so they are keeping up with it until the finale.  I guess it's a full time job if you want to win and drop big numbers.

by ereilly311 on November 19th 2009 at 11:50 am

Yeah it really is like a full time job. I wish I could fit in that much exercise a day, but I'd definitely need someone to push me to last that long every day. Ideally I like my work outs to be 1.5-2 hours long, but lately I've only been getting 1 hour ones in. I don't feel too bad about it though since I'm usually going to play basketball, soccer or volleyball later in the evening.

by rjct on November 19th 2009 at 2:04 pm

I'd need someone to go to work for me if I exercised half that much. Thanks for the link. I love Rebecca's transparency ... I think that's why she was one of my favorites.

Unless I missed it

posted by freckles314 on 6:24 am

Did anyone talk about the show this week?

I thought to makeovers were great.  My favorite of course was Rebecca, and she went home.  Holy cow is she beautiful, but I thought she was gorgeous when she stepped off the bus the first week.  Anyhow, I'm still rooting for Danny to win!  I preferred the gray hair (it's just something I think is sexy on a man), but he looked great too.  His daughter made me want to cry.  She was so sweet when she said that she couldn't wait to start her journey.

I knew as soon as Rebecca was below the yellow line she was going home.  It was four against two, and she just happened to be on the losing end.

What did you all think??

by CharityShantell on November 19th 2009 at 8:39 am

Danny's daughter made you WANT to cry? I bawled my eyes out! You know how all the contestants are always crying? My theory is that they're under so much stress working out 8 hours a day that their emotions are on a tight leash. I've been feeling like that lately :o).

Danny is my fave to win it. I really have no affinity for any other contestant. Maybe I just relate to him the most. It's so funny how he's starting to get handsome. I wish they had NOT taken his salt & pepper away, though. I've always been partial to the salt & pepper look. I have to admit he looks younger though.......  :o)

by jkbowman on November 19th 2009 at 12:27 pm

Hi, gang.  I'm new to the group, but Danny is also my favorite to win and has been for some time.   That said, I have to admit that I was a little taken back by his 'transformation'.   Perhaps it's because I have a soul patch myself (need to update my pic), but I think that's not it.  Danny is a former rocker.  As such,  I'm willing to bet the soul patch is a reflection of how he sees himself and probably something that makes him feel good about himself.    As for dressing him in a baby blue sweater vest - oh man. I bet that was a first for that.  -  imho, They made him look younger but not better.  Then again, that may just be me...

by rjct on November 19th 2009 at 2:03 pm

I agree that Danny looked younger, but not necessarily better. Although, his face was much younger without the soul patch. I did not like the clothing choice for him ... it was too Archie for me (not that I'm Betty or Veronica). But, I do like him. He tries to be consistently supportive and encouraging.

The saddest part for me was when his young daughter said she couldn't wait for her own journey. As someone who has battled weight most of my life, that just spoke volumes to me. I hope they can help her now, while she's young.

As an 'older' (55) woman, I was appalled at the outfit they put Liz in. We weigh about the same and, trust me, at this age and weight, those arms do not need to be flapping in the wind. But, I did think her hair was darling. Too bad I don't like her.

I do like seeing how they (the ones kicked off) look today. Rebecca has done an amazing job. Good for her!!

by jkbowman on November 19th 2009 at 3:00 pm

Yep -  I'd agree with all of that; especially the part about Rebecca.   She really has done great.   As for Danny,  you made me smile.  Archie nails it!  ;)

by rjct on November 19th 2009 at 5:33 pm

jk - Sadly, many on this thread won't even know who Archie is. I'm glad somebody understood my reference.

Movie popcorn

by ereilly311 on November 19th 2009 at 5:52 am

I saw that on GMA this morning, thats crazy and disgusting! I didn't get to see the whole story they did on it, but they said a bag of popcorn and a soda at the movies is 3 days worth of fat!

by freckles314 on November 19th 2009 at 6:25 am

Yeah, I always stay away from movie food period.  But not only are the calories high, but I pay enough just to see the movie!  It's expensive as HECK!

by cmjanssen on November 19th 2009 at 6:44 am

I am going to watch New Moon at midnight tonight and I am sure glad I saw this before I left!!!!

Guess I will sneak in some dried fruit!!!

Oh man i totally ate half a medium popcorn last sunday and i'm planning to see new moon on Saturday and was totally planning on geting popcorn! :( Boo to that! Maybe i'll bring my own!! :P

by gloriainny on November 19th 2009 at 9:46 am

This may be tacky but I pop my own 94% Fat Free popcorn at home and sneak it in my purse.   I have to have my popcorn with my movie!

by Cungem on November 19th 2009 at 10:57 am

Ha ha ha it is not Tacky Gloria!  I justify it as saving calories and money!  I'd buy their popcorn if it was 94% fat free.  I usually take a bag of pop chip and a bottle of water in my purse, he he he he...

by rjct on November 19th 2009 at 2:06 pm

I refuse to look at this. I go to the movies once or twice a year ... I don't want to know! (I like denial - unfortunately, that's how I've gotten to be this size.)

Finale in December

posted by erin384 on 12:45 pm

So they preview for next week says that there are only 2 episodes to the finale. They are having the show next week and the past contestant special on wednesday.  Are they counting the special in the count of 2 remaining episodes? Does that put the Finale on Dec 1 or Dec 8?

by billcole on November 18th 2009 at 3:54 pm

5 contestants left, so my guess is one episode to get down to the finalists then a vote with the live finale a week later.

by ereilly311 on November 19th 2009 at 5:59 am

Wow I can't believe the show is already that close to being done!

So I just have to brag on my self (yes I know, shameless!!)

I have almost completed my Couch to 5K program and today I ran (jogged) for 30 mintues straight without walking~!!!  2.6 miles at a 5.2 pace and no break!!! I am so excited. I know this may not sound like a great feat to many but as a obese (thats what the BMI scales says :-( ) woman I think it is AWESOME!!!!

by erin384 on November 18th 2009 at 12:36 pm

I think that that is awesome!  Way to go!!

by CharityShantell on November 18th 2009 at 1:28 pm

Yayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! I just barely started incorporating a tiny bit of slow jogging into my workouts so I know it's a BIG deal. Yayyyy!!

by tjones73 on November 18th 2009 at 1:54 pm

I think that is a great feat!  I am working through the Couch to 5K program as well.  It is not easy and quite an accomplishment for myself since I have never run before.  I am on week 6, day 2 and I am loving the program.
You are doing great job!  Congratulations!

by rjct on November 18th 2009 at 2:18 pm

I bow down to your amazing feat! Good job!! I ran for 45 seconds yesterday and just wanted to be put out of my misery. 30 minutes is amazing!! Congrats!!!

by billcole on November 18th 2009 at 3:48 pm

As a dedicated walker and nonrunner my hat is off to you.

by gloriainny on November 18th 2009 at 4:00 pm

Kudos to you! Awesome!
My goal is to one day run a half marathon! and believe me you are a lot closer to that goal than I am. I need to sign up for the Couch to 5K program too.

by moshjeier on November 18th 2009 at 4:24 pm

Awesome job! That's a huge accomplishment!

by Grandmamojo on November 18th 2009 at 4:53 pm

Awesome work!!   Keep it up you will be running a half marathon in no time!!!

by angiemm on November 19th 2009 at 5:03 pm

That is fantastic!  I did the program last year and it made it possible for me to run a 5k without taking walk breaks!  It is an awesome program!  I remember the first time I ran for 30 min straight and how awesome it felt.  Actually, I still feel that same accomlished feeling every time I do it.  I still can't believe I am fit enough to run that long!

How Many Calories???

posted by mdroches on 10:00 am

Greetings BL family!!

So, I'm really struggling with not seeing weight come off, and was wondering if I'm eating too many calories. It's hard to have a proper perspective of healthy caloric intake when you've been eating lots and lots of food.  I'm consuming 1600 calories a day, which I thought was not much at all, since I was probably eating more than twice that.  But I'm concerned that because I have some physical restraints that limit my ability to exercise, perhaps I should further reduce my calories.  You can find support for almost anything on the internet, so I thought I would check with you guys to see what's working for you...since google yielded a wide gammut of responses.  I don't want to starve myself...I know that that doesn't work in the long run, but want to see some success.

Thanks for any input!!
Happy Healthy Living to you all!!

by Kandibar181 on November 18th 2009 at 10:48 am

HI mdroches.... I am by all means no expert, but after peaking at your food diary, I would almost say that in most cases you are not eating enough. Specifcally on the days you are exercising. You seem to be really all over the map as far as your NET totals are concerned. I am like that alot too but I experimented with something you might want to try as well.  Try to be more consistant, say no more or less than 100 calories from your NET total for 1 week straight everyday. I did this for a week after being stuck at a stand still for about 3-4 weeks, and to my suprise, I dropped 4.5 lbs that week!! I was amazed! It is kind of tough to do, but I have faith that you will find a way to make it work. Let us know if you try it and how it works for you =)
 Good luck!

by HealthyNewfie on November 18th 2009 at 11:08 am

Hi there,

I weigh 135 lbs and I eat between 1500  - 1600 calories a day.  I just peaked below to see how much you weigh and I don't think you are eating enough.

Sometimes when you eat too little calories your body will react in a way that it will conserve all the food you are eating in fear that you will start to starve yourself.

I tend to use the Harris Benedict Equation to figure out how many calories to eat.  www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

I use the sedentary formula and eat back my calories that I really work out.  What I mean by 'really workout' is the amount of calories I did through exercise where I got my heartrate to a burning fat rate.

by billcole on November 18th 2009 at 3:50 pm

These two have it right.  Consistency is the key.  Work on getting your net calories consistent and see what happens for a week or so then tweak it.

by tacarino on November 19th 2009 at 2:44 pm

This helps me too. I've been in the same situation, 159 since Nov 1.  So I'm gonna give it a try too. Thanx for the good question.

by mdroches on November 19th 2009 at 7:29 pm

Thanks so much ladies!!! I will give it a whirl...and work on the consistency.

On a good note though,  I was down 2 lbs this morning!! woohoo!!!  I've decided that I'm doing myself a terrible injustice by weighing myself daily...so I'm going to stop that right now.  I've done a low-carb diet in the past (never again) , and you lose so much weight so fast that I've been discouraged at "normal and healthy" weight loss.
Tacarino...let me know how it works for you too!!

New to this group

posted by Poettis on 8:22 am

Hi all...I'm new to this group but definitely not new to the concept.  I've been riding on and falling off the weight loss wagon for a while now.  So today. I'm ready for a full lifestyle change.  How does the reporting work?  Do we just jump in adn start listing  our progress? What does SW LW TW AND CW mean?

by Poettis on November 18th 2009 at 9:01 am

My post got away from me...My weight today is 263.  My 1st goal weight is 240.  I'm taking it off in small achievable increments; at least that sounds like a good idea to me.  What do you all think?  Should I just focus on the total end goal from the beginning?

by tjones73 on November 18th 2009 at 9:01 am

Every Tuesday we weigh in. Prettygirl08 starts a thread for the weigh in each Tuesday. You reply to that with your stats.  SW = starting weight at Livestrong BW = beginning weight on this challenge LW = last weeks weight CW = current weight   Hope this helps.  Glad to have you here and I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck.

Just saw your second post. I also have smaller goals. My ultimate goal is to get to 135lbs.  But I have mini goals of 10, 20, 30, etc pounds lost. I like to have smaller goals worked into the big goal. It makes it seem a little less overwhelming and a little more possible.  I think it all depends what works best for each of us individually.

Edited by tjones73, on November 18th, 2009 at 9:04 am.

by krisnic03 on November 18th 2009 at 9:22 am

Little goals are great - they are a great way to get a motivational boost when you meet them! I also create NON-food rewards for meeting those goals. Like shopping trips with a certain amount of money or being able to buy something I really want. For me it's another way to keep the motivation going. Good luck!

What is with all the love pairs this season?

posted by ncarroll_18 on 5:34 am

So I thought it was really cute when we all found out Antoinio (however his name is spelled) and Dina were dating...  But I was watching Jay Leno last night and Rebecca was on there because he has the person that gets voted off on his show that night.  Rebecca revealed that she is dating Daniel Wright - Orange team.  I just don't know what I think about that... she said she fell in love with her best friend... which I understand and they've been through the same things but isn't Daniel like 18 or something?  I don't know... what do you think?

by Cungem on November 18th 2009 at 6:37 am

I noticed that too!  That is cute that they are pairing up.  Rebecca looks so good.  I was shocked when she said she is dating Daniel.  He's a sweet kid and I am happy for the 2 of them.  I think Daniel is 19 and she's 25.   I was sad to see her eliminated and was equally confused by Rudy's reasoning.  He must hold a lot of grudges, I guess it goes back to his conversation with Jillian, he holds everything inside.  I guess it came out at the elimination his true feelings?  who knows, I can understand Rebecca's hurt  or maybe it was just a cop out reason.  I guess my favorite among the remaining is Danny.  He looked so much younger with his makeover!  They all looked so good.

by billcole on November 18th 2009 at 7:49 am

She did look good on Leno.  She's 5 or 6 years older than Daniel--if they last that's not important.  Both are kids.  Good luck to them.

And didn't Danny look 15 years younger after the makeover?  Wow.  Maybe I need one to.  I could stand to be 15 years younger all of a sudden.

by rjct on November 18th 2009 at 11:06 am

Danny did look younger, but I couldn't believe how they dressed him. I thought it looked like something preppy out of the 60's. I was also sad that it seemed like Rudy was already growing back his beard. He looked so much better without it.

Gosh, funny - I love that I'm critiquing them! After they had professionals do it.

I was sorry to see Rebecca go. I don't see her and Daniel together, but I think it's only because we just get glimpses of them on the show.

I didn't get Rudy's comments at all. Oh, well.

But, I think my favorite moment was seeing how excited Rebecca was for Amanda's weight loss. She knew it meant she was at the bottom, but she was truly excited for her friend. I think that's why I like her - she is open with her feelings and gets so excited about things.

Headed to the gym to watch BL

posted by fitladyj on 4:50 pm

I read someone's post a week or two ago about them working out while the BL was on. It really inspired me. Thanks...I'm off to the gym! ( 7:45p here - something off with my time zone setting.)

by HealthyNewfie on November 17th 2009 at 7:53 pm

That sounds like a good idea...wish it came on earlier here!!

If you e-mail the two pictures to my personal e-mail address I can make it work with my scanner.  Let me know and I will PM you my personal e-mail address.

by CharityShantell on November 17th 2009 at 4:06 pm

I was thinking you could copy and paste them into "Paint" program and save them as one? Not sure, though....

by HealthyNewfie on November 17th 2009 at 7:54 pm

I did mine in Paint!!

by billcole on November 17th 2009 at 8:00 pm

It's easy to do with any graphics manipulation software like photoshop or picture it.

by ereilly311 on November 17th 2009 at 8:28 pm

I agree with Charity and Newfie, you can copy them both into paint and then crop them to make it fit the way you want.

Starting Again

posted by lianneu on 8:24 pm

I am new to this site.  I have been tracking my food for a week now.  I fell off the wagon on the weekend but jumped back on this morning.  To compensate for my weekness this weekend I walked 6km.  For me this is a big deal because I went by myself.  I usually need a buddy to get me motivated or go with me as I feel like I am not strong enough to do it on my own.
I am so worried I am going to quit again like I have done every time before.  I am sure my husband is tired of me saying this time I am going to do it...no really this time for real.  Then I lose 15-20lbs and fall of the wagon only to gain it all back again.  I just want to be happy and comfortable in my own skin, and not to be afraid of someone taking my picture, or going to a fancy function and having an anxiety attack trying to find something to wear.
I hope to get the support I need from this site to keep me honest and reach my goal.
Thanks
Lianne

by jeangray on November 17th 2009 at 9:02 am

Hi Lianne,

I can really emphathize with you on the starting and stopping. I would do the same thing lose 15-20 lbs and then quit.  I've been really motivated and am now at the lowest weight I've been in about 15 years.  I really believe that a big part of my success is the website and all the people in this group in particular. It's amazing how many people are going through exactly what you are.  Just keep posting and if you need help and motivation ask for it.  There are a lot of caring people here that want to see you succeed.  You can do it!!  No, you will do it!

Cheers!

 Hi all,
I am relatively new to livestrong and new to your group. Altho I have been on a slow climb to learn healthy habits for a few years now, I regained tons of weight in 2008 after a severe leg break in March, 08 that put me in a wheelchair for about 10 months (the leg re-broke), My weight is now at an alltime high and I've been struggling with being consistent on behaviors. Grrr. Hoping to get a fresh start here.

Frustrated! - need to vent...

posted by staceyspeager on 8:40 am

So I weighed in at an awesome 182.5 on Tuesday, I have been working out almost everyday, I am feeling great then all hell breaks loose on the scale this morning.  187 lbs!!!  What the Sh1t???
I went out for dinner and a movie with the hubby last night I had a 8 oz steak (no sauces, peppers or salt added), broccoli (no butter), and mashed potatoes.  I researched the resturant and nutritional info b4 we left the house.  I worked out in the morning and burned 415 calories to help prepare for dinner.  My husband and I shared the "best" appitizer on the menu and I ate about 900 calories at dinner total - I did not even have a glass of wine or nothing - only water!!!  After dinner we went to a movie and DID NOT even get popcorn!!  We snuck in a few bottles of water and crystal light packets for flavour.  After the movie we met up with some friends and played floor hockey for a little over an hour where I burned another 580 calories.  I wore my Polar F6 HRM...
When I got home from floor hockey I had a protein shake and another glass of water cause I was feeling a little hungry then showered and went to bed.
Gained 4.5 pounds!!!!!!!   How can someone strive to do the best they can then get slapped in the face like this??  I am pissed!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for listening...

Probably a water fluctuation.  See if it goes away over the next 2 days.  Good luck.

by CharityShantell on November 14th 2009 at 2:48 pm

Scales say nothing about body composition. That's why I only take stock in a monthly weigh-in, not daily or weekly. Don't get me wrong, I use the scale sometimes every day (and today I was up a couple lbs for some reason), but I refuse to worry about short trends, only longer ones. For example, I always seem to magically drop 5 lbs 1 day after my period ends (sorry for the guys in the group).

I was just thinking the same thing Bill said while I was reading your post. Your body can hold onto water for a number of reasons, like a big change in schedule, big anticipation or excitement for something happening out of the norm (like travel), or just the sodium in some restaurant foods, etc.

Hang in there...

by HealthyNewfie on November 15th 2009 at 5:15 am

Use the scales as only a small measure of your success.  As Charity States the scales don't say anything about your body composition.  It could be water retention (Drink lots of water) but more so measure yourself.   Ask yourself these questions?

Did you eat 3500 more calories then your normal eating allowance?  As ONE pound is 3500 calories.  So for you to gain 4.5 lbs you would have had to eat more then 15,000 calories over and above your daily allowance.

Are your clothes tighter then yesterday???

Hang in there..most restaurant are full of sodium to make it taste so yummy.

by jeangray on November 16th 2009 at 9:21 am

That happened to me before too.  Don't sweat it.  I did that one night with Chinese food and gained like 4 lbs.  The next day it went away.  I think HealthyNewfie is right, it's the sodium in the food.  It makes you retain water big time.  Even if you didn't add any the restaurant does.  You are doing a great job and don't let this derail you!

Getting caught up on everything that is...

posted by tanyacovertinid on 9:33 pm

Just started watching the biggest loser this week.....streaming video at nbc.com
Haven't gotten as far as you on all the episodes but find that it is very motivating.  I've been doing the eliptical trainer when watching.  It's real motivation as if I am getting tired I just see how much Bob and Jillian are kicking their butts and think to myself "if they can do that, then I can do this."
Sure hope they don't pull the episodes off the internet before I get a chance to finish watching them.
Is the finale next week?

by CharityShantell on November 14th 2009 at 2:52 pm

Way to get a workout in during all that motivating yelling! LOL

Hmmm.... I think there are at least 6 contestants so we're some weeks away from the finale. Just a quick note... Online they don't post the previous week's episode until Tuesday morning. So right now there is one episode that's not up there yet. I also watch past episodes at hulu.com.

FIBER ??

posted by tacarino on 6:51 pm

OK look at my journal. Thought I had pretty good food/fiber intake. But no BM in 4 days. took smooth move tea, took milk of magnesia and my dr even gave me colace(stool softner) Don't know why I dont feel just awful but i feel good, other than mentally cuz i keep thinking is this is!! lol  Don't want to have to do an enema, last resort, you know.

by HealthyNewfie on November 15th 2009 at 5:21 am

I just looked at your diary....why are you eating so little calories?  800 calories a day is very low and could be the reason why your body is reacting in a negative fashion.

I know this is something that is totally against biggest losers but I have IBS and when I have problems with the BM I eat something greasy and be assured it works.

Try to increase your calories 800 calories cannot be giving you all the nutrients required.  Talk to your health advisor.

by jeangray on November 16th 2009 at 9:24 am

You sholdn't eat less than 1200 calories a day.  I had the same problem a few weeks ago.  Fiber helps but again, I agree with HealthyNewfie, a greasy meal really helps.  I went on a pizza and chocolate chip cookie binge on Friday and by the next day I purged quite a bit (eww) but it does help!

I just want to find that wonderful balance, you know the one I am talking about?

One stop at the drive thru does not a derail make.  Speedbumps happen.  Relax and go on.  I've been seeing bacon cheeseburgers in my dreams lately.....

by tacarino on November 13th 2009 at 6:45 pm

I'm with you. I have 10-12 lbs to go. Go out with my friends and all I hear is how strong and good I look. Sometimes mentally is harder than the physical aspect. As  billcole said, one stop at McDonalds wont stop u from reaching your goal.Relax and realize it's one day at a time. Just make up those calories by doing your favorite fitness routin. twice!! I was happy to be at 159, so how did I celebrate....with a few grils taking me out for drinks(the worst thing for metabolisim) I think they want me back and fat with them. Im trying to get the going. When they ready they know Im; here for them, So go on anv vent, yell, scream but don;t make the same mistake twice. Figure out what you will do if ur in the same situation. Pack some healthy salad, frut, workout shoes and hike somewhere beautifull and have your lunch with nature. It's so beautifull. Maybe a small bottle of vino too to unwind. You know what....I just taked myself into it for tomorrow....Everyone, pack a healthy lunch (for one, two, four), hike/walk there and enjoy it in nature. Pictures will help capture the day and u can post them everywhere to remind yourself to get out, it's a beautifull world!!! I am worth it !!!!

by HealthyNewfie on November 15th 2009 at 5:24 am

If we deprive ourselves from the things we 'crave' or want we will fail in our health journey.
Bill go have that bacon cheeseburger, just don't have 2 or three or one everyday.
Lori enjoy your McDonald's...but making substiutions shows that your heart is still there.

I splurge at Wendy's once a week.  I normally have a grilled chicken without the bun and small fries or a small chili.   I account for it and move on.

Jillian's reaction to Shay leaving

How many people think Jillian is going to give the people who voted Shay off a bootay beatdown workout when she finds out!!!! I can hardly wait for next week.

by marjim71 on November 13th 2009 at 7:07 am

It should be a great show.  Hopefully they won't edit or delete any piece of her reaction.  I was so disappointed they didn't show an update after the show and then I saw she was on Jay Leno and looking pretty good and so was Daniel.

by ereilly311 on November 13th 2009 at 7:13 am

That will be quite interesting to see Jillian's reaction, I'm sure she is going to flip out. I really liked Shay and am happy she is still on the right track, but I hated how even to the last episode she always used her weight as an excuse. That she couldn't compete as well with the others because she was the heaviest one there, well then stop b*tching about it and just do what you can!

Update from Dr's Appointment Nov 12, 2009 Broke a Weight Barrier

posted by fitladyj on 1:10 pm

It's official! I weighed in at 222! With my clothes on! LOL !!! My weight barrier was 223. I haven't been below 223 in 7 years!
The Dr. did recommend I track inches also so I've got an appointment set with a physical trainer on Saturday to get going with that. My clothes are falling off me. I'm going to have them taken up and look forward to purchasing a few new pieces in March if I can continue on this path.

I was wrong about my A1c number...my last A1cwas 6.5%  It is now 6.8%. New goal is to get it below 6% by March 2010. My Dr. says she has seen cases where people lose weight and their A1c actually rises. So she just up my evening dosage by 2 units to get my morning number below 100.  The is no major foot damage. I believe when I get more of this weight off, there will be less strees on them and less pain. My cholesterol went from 211 down to 144 (Trying to get it below 100) LDL's from 155 to 94... Triglyc's were 144. My HDL's dropped from 45 down to 42 so I've go to get them back up between 45-50.
I'm excited about my progress. It's just the fuel I need to keep me moving!

by HealthyNewfie on November 12th 2009 at 5:34 pm

Great job on the weight loss!!

by gloriainny on November 13th 2009 at 5:55 am

Congratulations! Thats Awesome! Keep it up.  Also, I also had foot/knee problems and my podiatrist said every 1lb you take off is like 5 lbs of pressure you are reducing from your knees and feet.

by fitladyj on November 13th 2009 at 6:49 am

Wow!  I didn't know that 5 pounds of pressure for ever 1 pound? More incentive. to keep at it... Thanks

by ereilly311 on November 13th 2009 at 9:34 am

Great job!  And that is great info the 1lb is 5lbs of pressure. I definitely need that to help with all of my ankle/knee problems.

by Cungem on November 13th 2009 at 2:11 pm

That's awesome!  Go You!

by librarydogmom on November 13th 2009 at 5:11 pm

An orthopedic doctor told me every pound we lose is 6 -- SIX -- pounds less pressure on our bones. Yay!

When I saw him for a 2nd opinion, another doc had told me I needed back surgery immediatley, today, don't wait ... the 2nd doc told me not to have the surgery, and also said the above. I'd lost a few pounds by the time I saw him, and now--with about 70 gone--I have a lot less pain. I have a vertebra out of place, so my back will always be sore, but w/o surgery I can still walk 3-4 miles, run on the elliptical 40-60 min, etc. And that's with 2 artificial knees. Not bad for an old lady :-)

Thanksgiving?

posted by LoriGloria on 11:51 am

Crosspost:
This is the hardest time of the year to be on a weight loss journey.
What are some great ideas to help us all success for Thanksgiving?

Me..?. I am the cook.. therefore I will make less food, and what I do make will be prepared healthier.

1)  An idea is to use 1% for the homemade mashed potatoes, do not add butter, let those who wish to have it add it on their own plate.
2 ) Have whole grain rolls as well as, regular rolls
3) more steamed veggies
4) eat more turkey less of #1 and #2 above.
5) Eat the Egg White only of the deviled eggs
6) As for the dessert... yummmm my thoughts are this Cool Whip Free for the topping.. and have a little slice of pumpkin pie as long as I have followed my own ideas above 1-5 if I don't then sorry no pie !!
What are your thoughts?

by erin384 on November 12th 2009 at 12:39 pm

This link has some good recipie ideas for a 500 calorie Thanksgiving!
http://www.sparkpeople.com/resource/nutrition_articles.asp?id=1408

My strategy this year is to go ahead and celebrate, once.  I am not celebrating at every function I go to.  Every year I tend to go to about 3 Thanksgivings, and 6 Christmases.  So this year I will decide which function to celebrate at, and do it just that once!  Also I will keep up with the workouts, time off work means I have no excuse not to get moving!

by LoriGloria on November 12th 2009 at 12:43 pm

I AM running that morning @ 9am a 5K Turkey Trot ! :) Should be fun, there are GREAT prizes !!

by awchick on November 12th 2009 at 4:05 pm

I personally think that Thanksgiving should be a day off from dieting.  Eat all the yummy Thanksgiving foods that you like, it is only one day.  If you are worried about weight gain, just eat one plate.  And a small sample of the different desserts.  If you are worried about snacking on the leftovers, just give them away to your guests.  Then get back on track until Christmas.  That is what I am going to do anyway.   Enjoy the feast it's not going to kill you! ;)

by CharityShantell on November 12th 2009 at 10:12 pm

I've been back and forth in my mind on this topic. I know everyone needs to make a personal decision for themselves because the population seems to be very polarized. I have 'friends' who will bring their scale to their families home and question the ingredients so they can track later, etc. Others say, just have fun, forget the day and get back on track the next.
Usually when I can't make up my mind; when I'm kinda 50/50 either way, I'll just check in with my husband and whatever his opinion is, I'll do it. So I finally talked to him and he just said, "I think you should just eat whatever is there in modest portions until you are satisfied and don't eat to the point of being over-full."

So, I'm happy to have my mind made up and my plan set. I will not track that day (because I won't be counting carefully and I don't want to post wrong numbers, that wouldn't be honest in my opinion). I will eat whatever looks good in normal portions until I'm satisfied. I will listen carefully to my hunger and stop when I'm full. I will not over eat, I will NOT stress, and if I gain lbs, they will come off again. Because I WILL be back on track the next day.

Again, everyone needs to make their own decision. But there's mine for what it's worth.

by ereilly311 on November 13th 2009 at 7:10 am

I plan to just eat what I want but have control over it, no pigging out like I would have normally done. We usually go out to breakfast at like 7:30am when my dad gets out of work and then just sit around for a few hours doing nothing so I think this year I will go out for a walk/run while waiting to go to relatives houses. I also just realized that my gym is right near the mall and it is going to be insane trying to get there on Friday :(

To Eat or Not to Eat?

posted by krisnic03 on 7:19 am

Do you eat the calories you burn from exercise?
Right now I don't eat mine and I'm wondering if it is healthy to have a bunch of days in a row where my net calories are under 500...

by gloriainny on November 12th 2009 at 7:23 am

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing???  Great question. I hope someone answers this soon.

by billcole on November 12th 2009 at 7:52 am

Livestrong's calorie guides are set up for whatever goal you program.  I put in my weight and told it my activity level and then set a goal of 2 pounds a week in weight loss.  It tells me that I can eat x number of calories in order to achieve that goal.

I don't worry about eating back my exercise calories.  I focus on the way I feel.  If I am a little hungry I do nothing.  If my stomach is treatening to contact a divorce lawyer I eat something.   Most days I net about 12-1500 cals (with a total intake of around 1900).  Right now this is working for me.  Livestrong says I can have about 2150 and hit my goal.

I keep track of my cals but I don't freak over them any more.  I used to.  If I go a little over today, that's fine because I was 150 under yesterday or the day before.

I think you need the basic knowledge the site gives you but paying attention to your body is so much more important.  Your metabolism may be a bit up or down today or whatever.  The software does not know this and cannot account for it.  That's why they give you a diary to say how you feel--in hopes that you'll write something and thus listen to what your body says today.

by penguin930 on November 12th 2009 at 8:17 am

If you are looking to lose weight, you should not eat back the calories you burn unless you haven't reached your BMR amount yet.  Your body needs a certain amount of calories per day in order for your organs to survive and for your body to not switch into survival mode.  This amount of calories is your BMR amount.

Edited by penguin930, on November 12th, 2009 at 9:54 am.

by Tinga on November 12th 2009 at 9:13 am

I have a caloric goal of 1850 per day. Previously, getting that many would have been a breeze. Now that I have changed my lifestyle, it seems a LOT harder to get those calories in.
Breakfasts are NOT my thing. Ever since I was pregnant and had horrible morning sickness ( I lost 30 lbs while pregnant) I just feel sick in the morning when I eat. I don't want to end up hating my new food choices by just ramming them into my mouth, just to make my caloric intake. Is anybody else finding this out, and how did you deal with it? Slow uptake of food.. adiing it gradually?

by krisnic03 on November 12th 2009 at 9:20 am

Tinga-
If I eat 'solid' foods for breakfast I usually get a sick feeling. To make sure I get some sort of food for breakfast I have either a slimfast shake or a carnation instant breakfast mix with non-fat milk. This seems to help me get some calories in and not feel yucky. Hope that helps!

by erin384 on November 12th 2009 at 9:42 am

Your question is complicated and can lead down a rabbit hole…
There are two ways of looking at your calorie goals. If you set your goal by adding your Base Metabolic Rate (the number of calories you need to breath, digest, etc.) and your Total Daily Energy Expenditure, you should not eat back the calories burned from working out. If you set you goals using the LiveStrong tool, you should eat to net what it recommends for you. Thus your Net will be the same as the Goal.

If you would like to calculate your BMR you can go to the following link:
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/

I you would like to calculate your BMR+TDEE you can go to the following link:
http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/harris-benedict-equation/

In general, it is not healthy it eat less than your BMR. When you calories are this low it can be difficult to get the nutrients that you need and the energy your body needs to function. Further more it can lead your body to believe that you are experiencing a period of food shortage, and consequently it will not release your stored energy (fat).

In order to loose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume, but you need to find a deficit that works for you body and will allow you to continue to loose weight in the long run. Know that 3500 calories is one pound, and that the general rule of thumb is to aim to loose 1% of your weight a week. My personal recommendation would be to set your calories higher with a lower deficit, and then gradually increase the deficit as you see how your body reacts.

FYI: if you have been eating very little your metabolism may have adjusted to the lower amount, so if you increase your calories it may take a few days for your body to adjust and realize that there is no food shortage.

by rjct on November 12th 2009 at 1:54 pm

Ideally, I eat back some of the calories. My (manual) calorie goal is 1200. If I work out a lot, I eat back some of the calories (eating a total of 1500-1600) most days. If I don't work out, I shoot for the 1200. It seems to work for me to do it that way, at least for now. I'm still 9 pounds away from 'overweight' and 40 pounds from 'normal' BMI, so that may not work for me down the road.

by CharityShantell on November 12th 2009 at 2:47 pm

Nice answers Bill, Penquin, and especially Erin. Love it!!!

For example, if I set my LS page to "sedentary" and that I want to lose 2 lbs a week, it gives me a goal of 2247 (I know that sounds like a lot, but hang in there 'cause I'm 38 years old, 318 lbs & female).
My BMR according to most sites is 2186.

2186 is the absolute lowest I eat in a day right now (this goes down as I lose weight). But because I set my calorie goal at "sedentary", I don't stress about "eating back" some of the calories I burn. And if I go over my goal a little, I look at the foods and consider my hunger levels. If the foods were good, and I had TRUE hunger, I feel good about it.
