Comfort Food Replacement

posted by sambear on 2:48 pm

Hey all!

What do you do for yourself on a day where you would usually turn to comfort food?

I just had a very rough day at work and am currently all wound up and upset about it. I would go work it off, but I'm physically exhausted from walking around all day and having to deal with work. I want nothing more to completely scarf down my favorite comfort foods of french fries and mint chocolate chip ice cream until I forget how horrible a day it was.

Does anyone have any good ideas that offer the comfort of the food without the calories?

Chcolate chip rice cakes with paenut butter taste like a crunchy reese cup with only 90 cals I think..

Smart Ones makes a mint choclate chip sunday for about 160 cals and they rock.

I;m sure Hungrygirl.com has french fries made in the oven with fiber one breading that sound good.

Low cal pudding cups come in banana fudge and dulce de leche...

Guiltless Gourmet tortilla chips and salsa only run about 140 cals for 18 chips and a 1/4 cup salsa

healthy choice makes a pretty decent mint chocolate chip icecream.
i have taken a liking to breyers fatfree double churn french chocolate icecream. i do weight watchers and its only a point per serving. When i really am in need of comfort food i will eat that and spoon in alittle reduced fat peanut butter.... omg. sooooo good.
the fat free pringles are only 1 point for about 14 of them too.

The Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches are sooo good and only 140 calories for 1. They are also 98% fat free. You can't beat that. You can still have fries. Just don't fry them. Cut up a huge potato and spray some olive oil on a tray. Put those puppies in the oven and your set. You can also make your own burger. If you like ground turkey that would be a better option than ground beef. Instead of usuing buns (which are usually so high in calories) use bread that is low in calories. There is the Sarah Lee bread that is only 45 calories for one slice. Can't beat that. If you want bacon, GO TURKEY. Butterball has the best turkey bacon that I have tasted so far. It's only 50 calories for 3 slices! There are ways to induldge without killing your calories for the day. Just plan right. Good luck!

I like to take those instant mashed potatoes, the one that comes with the 2 packs in the box, and eat that. I use hot water instead of milk and it takes away some of the calories. The calories depend on the brand you get, but just add water. You can use as much or as little flakes as you want.

Hungry girl has some great recipies too.+

try a shot of Vodka & a nap.

by amandak3011 on Mar 4, 2008 at 6:41 pm

i love those 100-calorie pack tapioca puddings.

but i have to agree with kari, vodka and a nap is a great alternative :)

100 cal packs of anything sweet or smartones make good desserts at like 150 calories

by dspencer on Mar 4, 2008 at 8:26 pm

I totally agree w/ kari! Vodka ALWAYS helps! :)

Maybe you just need to break your psyche of the need for comfort food and find comfort in something else altogether outside of food? I mean, maybe try to reprogram yourself to need a bubblebath or a mad workout, or aromatherapy or watch a movie or something that makes you calm and happy.

Problem is when you're eating to comfort yourself, even after it's eaten you'll still probably be stressed and you'll probably continue eating that food so the 100 calorie packs and substitutions probably won't do it for you. I know that's no fun, but eating still should be for hunger not for emotional reasons and if you've already identified yourself as an emotional eater it's your responsibility to try to change that not enable it in yourself.

Just a thought. I like some of the other ideas too if you don't like mine haha.

I like strawberries and fat free cool whip. You can eat a very satisfying amount and still not be completely out of control on calories.

I have to agree with Celeste here. I know that all of the other suggestions are better, healthier, and lower calorie alternative to your comfort food, but it does not address the fundamental problem of turning to food when you are stressed out. I suffer greatly from this problem myself and was near in fits the other night because I wanted some comfort food SOOOOOO bad. I am still looking for something other than food to turn to in times of stress. Definetly exercising would be better. Many people have also given me the suggestion of a punching bag to beat up on. Other popular suggestions included an inflatable hammer or bat to beat on your bed or something to take out your frustrations.

Eating when I'm stressed, upset, sad, angry, (insert any emotion other than happy or excited here) has always been a problem of mine. That's one of the reasons I'm the weight I'm at. I've actually had counseling on it at one point (the therapist didn't really help too much).

Since I've started really exercising and watching my food intake, it's gotten a LOT better. If it was remotely nice outside, I'd probably blast my ipod and go for a walk in the park. If i had ANY energy, I'd work through my emotions on the elliptical/weight training. Unfortunately sometimes there's just not enough time/energy to go to the gym, have a bubble bath, watch a movie, ect - which is why I was looking for healthy alternatives.

(BTW: A two small spoonfuls of Edy's slow churn mint chocolate chip (1/2 cup = 160 calories) got me through the rest of the day!)

Sometimes you just need that quick attitude adjustment before continuing on with your day!

Thanks for your suggestions everyone :)

I also agree with Celeste. When I feel like curling up with food, I curl up with a book instead. or i take a bubble bath, lights off, candles. relax :)

oh I just got Buddhist prayer beads for my birthday from a good friend and I started using those to recite positive affirmations to myself to take my mind off things too...it's a form of meditation, self-hypnosis and brain washing to help you get through difficult times.
